Llangammarch Church Inscribed Stone
Llangammarch Church Inscribed Stone submitted by geoffstickland : Inserted in the masonry above the main door of the church. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A fragment of an Early Christian carved stone now incorporated into the facade of the Church porch at Llangammarch. It is carved with a ringed cross, a spiral and a frontal outline of a human figure. It has a series of annulets (mouldings in the form of a ring) and recessed squares below the ring-cross. It is part of an inscribed pillar stone found in the 19th Century when removing the foundation of the western wall of the churchyard.

The stone bears the following inscription, preceded by a chi-rho symbol:
IACONVS FILIVS MINI/IACIT Thought to commemorate 'Jaconus son of Minus'. Dated to the 6th century AD.

Llangammarch church is listed as medieval though rebuilt in 1915-16 which would probably explain why no Dark Age archaeology has been discovered.

It is unfortunately the case that carved inscriptions cannot be dated. The archaeological context is the only guide to dating but, as the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust points out, the original location of the inscribed stone is unknown.

"other than the inscribed stone whose original location is not known, there is no confirmatory evidence".

Nice item to find, and I think it is well worth posting!

I see from Coflein that they consider the fragment to be 9th Century rather than 6th, but also Early Christian, and that they have an additional image and interpretation for this site
