Pictured is a newly acquired artefact now on display at the museum - a beautifully crafted Saxon ring with gems inset into a bird in flight design at its centre. Described as as "on a par with" the many fine Saxon objects found at the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial.

We tell the story of the people and events that shaped the Epping Forest District of southwest Essex. Explore our fascinating collection including paintings, jewellery, costumes, a woolly mammoth tusk, “King Harold’s battle axe” and the Waltham Abbey Bible. See our changing exhibitions, galleries, gift shop and enjoy a variety of activities suitable for all ages. We also offer events and activities that take place at the museum and in the community. We are housed in a beautiful Grade II* listed Tudor building dating from 1485 to 1603. The entire building is fully accessible and a lovely community space for all to use.

Update May 2026:
coldrum has drawn our attention to a new artefact now on display at the museum, published in BBC News, "Anglo-Saxon 'Woden ring' to go on display, 12th April 2026".

"The antiques and reclamation dealer from Wickford initially suspected he had found a piece of tin foil when his metal detector started pinging at a site near Matching Green, Essex, in 2023.
"It was not until I picked it up and by the weight of it, I knew it was gold, and my friend could see from my face I'd found something really good," he said.
Young, who took up detecting about nine years ago, reported the discovery to the Essex finds liaison officer Lori Rogerson, who described the ring as "on a par with" the many fine Saxon objects found at the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial."

The address of the museum is 39-41 Sun Street, Waltham Abbey, EN9 1EL
Opening hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturday: 10am to 4pm. Closed Thursdays and Sundays.
There is no official admission charge, but the museum relies on donations.
