The grave dates from the Bronze Age and was 72 m long and 27 m broad. The burial pit itself measured 2.80 x 1.10 m and had contained a wooden coffin with cremated human remains. The only grave good was a burned bronze needle, indicating that the grave had been raided before. The burial mound was surrounded by three trenches. Two were concentric, oval-shaped trenches around the burial mound, while the third also surrounded an elongated area in font of the mound, which gives the site a keyhole-like appearence. It has been speculated, that this area might have been a gathering place to commemorate the dead.
Natrop cemetery also contains round barrows as well as the typical later versions of smaller keyhole-graves with one trench. However, it has been speculated that the impressive Keyhole-Grave VII could have been the archetype of this kind of graves.
The finds from the cemetery include a big cup from the late Neolithic, several bronze fibulae and a small ship made of clay from the late Bronze Age. Most of the original finds have been lost in World War II.
Today, nothing can be seen at the original site above the ground. Some of the remaining artefacts are displayed in the Hermann-Grochtmann-Museum Datteln and the Museum für Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte Dortmund.
