The barrow cemetery Oespel was situated near the Oespel stream in Dortmund (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). After smaller excavations in 1949 and 1954, the entire cemetery was excavated between 1991 and 1994. The barrow cemetery dates from the Late Bronze Age (ca 1200 – 750 BC) and measured at least 5 ha.

About a quarter of the 269 detected burials was surrounded by a trench, sometimes even by up to three trenches. Most of the trenches form a keyhole-structure (Schlüssellochgräben). Several barrows had been relatively large, with one of them displaying a length of at least 37.50 m. Apart from this also round barrows and long barrows have been found.

All graves contained urns with cremated human remains. The analysis of the bone fragments revealed that the anticipated average life was 23 years. The average body hight was 1.73 cm for men and 1.59 cm for women. Just a few of the burials contained grave goods, like e.g. pottery or bronze artefacts. Among the most interesting artefacts was an iron sheet, which represents the oldest iron artefact found in the Ruhr area. It must have been imported via the nearby trading route Hellweg, because no local iron production existed at this time. Moreover, it is interesting to note, that the cemetery was constructed near the Hellweg by purpose because its shape follows the ancient road and the graves are aligned with it.

The corresponding Bronze Age settlement has not been found yet. Instead, a Neolithic settlement (Im Weißen Feld) had been found in the surrounding area during further excavations.

Several finds are displayed in the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte in Dortmund (pictured). Moreover, a 3D-reconstruction of the barrow cementery made by the Archäologische-RuhrZeiten-project can be viewed on Google Earth.

Please note, that the reconstructed round barrow in Oespel itself (as shown in one of the figures) was only shown temporarily. It served for the presentation of the excavation site during academically meetings in 1993. Unfortunately, it is not visible anymore. The reconstructed round barrow in the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Dortmund is still part of the exhibition.
