Ancient Village or Settlement in Ukraine
The city of Volodymyr dates back to the Kyivan Rus' period as the centre of Volhynia (Lodomeria). Its importance declined after the Mongol Invasion in 13th century that destroyed most of the city. The Rus'-period hillfort (dytynets) survives to this day, and the nearby Dormition Cathedral, although largely rebuilt, preserves the general original structure.
