Rock-shelter in North Rhine-Westphalia. Katzensteine ("Cats' Stones") are a picturesque rock formation consisting of slightly red sandstone. The maximal height of the rocks is about 15 metres. They are located at the eastern bank of a stream named Veybach, about 300 metres northeast of the village Katzvey. During an examination in 1971, led by the archaeologist Hartwig Löhr, several stone tools from late Upper Paleolithic, dating back to about 13.000 BP, were discovered.
Most of these about 130 pieces, mostly blades or lamellas (backed points, used as arrow-heads), as well as several fragments, consisted of different kinds of flint which had been exploited within a radius of about 30-35 kilometres.
Among the faunal remains at the place were bones of aurochs, red deer, roe, beaver, horse etc.
The abris were used as a short-term settlement which can be related to the Federmesser culture.
The relatively good preservation of this Paleolithic site and its remains is the result of an enormous disaster: About 13.000 years ago an erruption of Laacher See (Laach Lake)-volcano buried everything under enormous layers of pumice and ashes.
Remains of a small Roman quarry were discovered in the rocks' northeastern neighbourhood. Here the exploitation works date back to the 1st and 2nd (perhaps also to the 3rd) century AD.
Fortunately these activities were rather limited. That explains the relatively good condition of the rocks.
Furthermore in a distance of some hundred metres a temple of the roman goddess Diana (1st century AD) was located.
