Ancient Village or Settlement in Moravia

Landek hill (Landek from the German "land-ecke", i.e. "corner of the land") rises in the Silesian part of Ostrava city above the confluence of the Odra river and Ostravice river.

In addition to the strategic location, which was the reason for choosing this hill as the site of a Paleolithic settlement of mammoth hunters, Landek hill is also unique in that coal seams come to the surface on the southern and southeastern slopes. Everywhere else in Ostrava and its surroundings, coal is hidden deep below the surface (in the 18th, 19th and 20th century, Ostrava used to be the leader in coal mining in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, from 1918 to 1989 in Czechoslovakia, and then in the Czech Republic).

Modern industrial coal mining started here in 1782 (mining ended in 1991). However, due to its easy availability, mammoth hunters here already used coal as fuel. Landek hill is thus the second oldest place (after southern France, where the Paleolithic use of lignite as a fuel is proven) where man also used "stones" as a source of heat. The Landek hill was firstly inhabited about 30,000 BCE and the settlement was discovered in 1924. It is part of a continuous strip of archaeological sites stretching from Willendorf in Austria (www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=22091) through Dolní Věstonice in South Moravia (www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=29621) , Předmostí u Přerova in North Moravia (www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=32760) to Krakow in Poland (www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=30808) .

In 1927, the first professional archaeological survey of this site was carried out. Another one, much more detailed survey was carried out in 1952-1953. During this second survey, the Petřkovice Venus (Petřkovice village was already then a part of Ostrava city) was found by Bohuslav Klíma.
The Petřkovice Venus, made of hematite, is about 21,000 years old and quite unusual in her body shape, which is slender, while most other Venus figures represent very "plus size" women with massive bellies and breasts (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_figurine). The figure is deposited in Brno in South Moravia. However, in the first half of 2013, visitors to the British Museum in London could view it during the exhibition.

More information about the Petřkovice Venus (and photos) can be found on the English Wikipedia

Landek hill is a protected location - a national natural monument. However, the settlement itself is not visible in any way on the site. There are only replicas of the wooden huts of the mammoth hunters.
