Cave or Rock Shelter in Moravia

The Moravian Karst is an exceptional protected landscape located roughly north of the regional capital Brno. Covering an area of approximately 92 km², this remarkable region boasts over 1,000 caves, gorges, and complex underground systems. It is not only a paradise for tourists but also a site of great significance for experts in archaeology and paleontology. So-called "Smrtní" is one of the most easily accessible cave in area.

Its name however immediately draws attention. Rather sinister-sounding “Smrtní” can be translated as the “Cave of Death”. But the origin is far less dramatic. The name derives from an ancient Slavic tradition known as the "carrying out of Death" in which the figure of Morana – the personification of winter and death – was symbolically expelled from the community. This very location was regionaly closely associated with that ritual.

With its three narrow corridors and a total length of approximately 130 metres the Morana Cave is rather modest one. Like many other cave systems in this region it is also an archaeological site.. though not of the greatest calibre. The most noteworthy discovery dates back to the 1960s. A deer antler club likely from the Eneolithic or Hallstatt period was once part of the collection at the local village school.

The cave is located on the northern slope above the main road just outside the village. Due to traffic it is strongly recommended to approach the site from above.
