Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Bourgogne:Côte-d'Or (21)

The Douix river comes out of a cliff on the edge of town and flows a short disance before flowing into a side arm of the Seine. It is already a very scenic place, but several years ago, archeologists dug up the basin and found large numbers of bronze fibula dating back to the iron age and beyond as well as other archeological artifacts now in the museum. There is a niche in the cliff face above the source and i wonder if previously a Celtic or Roman god occupied the location before a saint was move there.

Amusingly, local women had been throwing needles and safety pins into the basin even up the 20th century while wishing for good health. Amazing how ancient mores last over millenia. 220 Meters Altitude
