The museum of Santa Caterina, part of the Musei Civici in Treviso, is housed in a 14th Century convent which was redeployed as army barracks in the 19th Century.
It is still possible to admire some of the remaining frescos in the deconsecrated church, which also contains the delightful "cycle of saint Ursula", frescos saved from a nearby demolished church.
The archaeological section occupies the basement and the ground floor of the old convent, illustrating 100,000 years of history relating to this part of Veneto with a collection of flint tools, basic knives and stone axes, as well as swords and farming tools.
My favourite pieces are five votive disks depicting a key-bearing Goddess, dated between the 4th and 2nd Century BC.
From the information panel I learned that the bronze disks were purchased by Luigi Bailo (one of the most important figures in the cultural life of Treviso) at the beginning of the 20th Century, their most probable provenance is the archaeological site of Montebelluna or the Piave Valley.
The largest disc, perhaps the oldest given the complexity and accuracy of the rendering of the decoration, features an elaborate frame and, at the centre, a female figure: she is covered in a short cloak with a hood and wears a wide finely decorated dress. She carries a key in her hand, she is the "Great Mother" who governs the animal (she is depicted between a wolf and a griffin-bird) and the plant kingdoms.
In the other disks animals are no longer represented, but different plants appear to symbolize the changing of the seasons.
One of the disks is only decorated with a geometrical pattern.
On the first floor of the old convent it is possible to visit the Pinacoteca, a collection of Mediaeval, Renaissance and Modern Art, I particularly appreciated the detailed explanation of the frescos that can still (just about) be seen on a nearby pavilion, the 13th Century Loggia dei Cavalieri.
Treviso, with its canals and watermills, is close to Venezia/Mestre, from which it can be easily reached by train or with the local bus, it also has its own airport.
Other sites of interest include Piazza dei Signori (dominated by the 13th Century tower), the already mentioned Loggia dei Cavalieri, the Cathedral with the 12th Century Baptistery, and a local curiosity is "Fontana delle Tette" (a fountain with a statue depicting a woman from whose breasts white and red wine would pour in the past on special festivities). Treviso is also a contender when it comes to the origins of Tiramisù... it's important to try some, just to join the debate of course.
