Museo degli Eremitani
Museo degli Eremitani submitted by CoppellaiaMatta : Some of the trachyte stone markers (V BC) on display, one was even used as a modern curb stone before finding its place in the Museum! (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Eremitani Museum (Padova) is located in a former Augustinian monastery next to Giotto's wonderful Scrovegni Chapel. The building houses the Archaeological Museum on the ground floor and the Museum of Medieval and Modern art on the first floor. The archaeological collection includes items from ancient Egypt and Greece, as well as notable pieces from the Roman period.

My favourite section is dedicated to life in the Paleo-Venetian period and showcases votive objects, pottery and steles, I particularly appreciated the in-depth explanations relating to the ancient alphabet used by the local population.
Most information panels are in Italian only, but audioguides are available.

According to mythical tradition, the ancient Veneto peoples, originally from Paphlagonia in Asia Minor, were led by Antenor, a noble Trojan advisor to King Priam, to the northern Adriatic coast.
In fact, small groups of people arrived in the area at several different moments in time, slowly giving rise to a new ethnic and cultural community (1st millenium BC).
Very little information is available about them, we do know much more about how and where they buried their dead, outside their settlements.
The museum displays a collection of the steles found on the most important tombs.

A curiosity: there's a lovely park right next to the Museum and the Scrovegni Chapel, the shape of the grounds is unmistakable, but very little remains of the Roman Arena that once stood there. Built in 70 A.D. and very similar in stile and size to the Arena in Verona, it was demolished during the Middle Ages.

Padova is a short train ride from Venezia-Mestre. It is mostly known for the Scrovegni Chapel (book in advance if you want to see it) and the Basilica di sant'Antonio. Piazza delle Erbe, dominated by Palazzo della Ragione, is well worth a visit, as well as Palazzo Zuckermann, the museum across the street from the Eremitani Museum.

Museo degli Eremitani
Museo degli Eremitani submitted by CoppellaiaMatta : Costoza Stele (II-IV BC). Two horses pull an essedum, a Gallic chariot, carrying two figures: the charioteer holding the reins and, behind, a (possibly) woman. There's an elongated shield leaning against the chariot. A bird flies above the horses. An asphodel in bloom on the ground symbolizes the flowery meadow on the banks of the Acheron. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Museo degli Eremitani
Museo degli Eremitani submitted by CoppellaiaMatta : Camin Stele (VI BC). A man and a woman are facing each other. Could be the farewell between spouses before the journey to the underworld. The woman, in a short paleo-venetian dress, with a cloak and a veil, offers a bird to the man, perhaps a symbol of the soul of the deceased. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Museo degli Eremitani
Museo degli Eremitani submitted by CoppellaiaMatta : Some of the bronzes (V-II BC) showcased at Museo degli Eremitani, Padova. Most of the items were probably used as votive offering. The three statuettes at the centre of the picture (V-IV BC), in particular, are describes as female devotees or maybe representations of the Mother Goddess. (Vote or comment on this photo)
