Ancient Village in Polk County, Iowa.Village site dating to approximately 5000 BC with remains of four oval structures, potentially houses and graves. Thousands of artifacts have been collected, including stone spear points, a ground stone celt, and the debris from tool making. Many animal remains including deer, raccoon, turkey, shellfish, bison and turtle have been found.
Named "The Palace" by the field crew excavating for the University of Iowa - based Office of the State Archaeologist for its fine condition and size, the site was likely buried by floodwaters. The site lies on the north side of the Des Moines River, immediately adjacent to the city's wastewater treatment plant. It was discovered during the preparation of the area for an addition to the water treatment plant. A preservation plan is possible, and still under discussion.
Note: Archaeologists find 7,000-year-old site in Des Moines. "A treasure that will help us understand ... the early people of Iowa: what they ate, technologies they had developed, how they interacted as a community"
