Tas-Silg
Tas-Silg submitted by AlexHunger : Tas-Silg is an ancient Maltese Temple just east of Marsaxlokk. It was subsequently re-used and remodelled by the Phoenicians and the Romans and possibly christians. The Phoenicians conducted human sacrifices there. Only the foundation of the original Maltese neolithic temple remain. See arced stones. The rest of the site with remains of colonnades is quite interesting. The site is normally closed... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Temple in Malta. The temple of Tas-Silg is on a rounded hilltop overlooking Marsaxlokk Bay and is named after the chapel on its southern slopes dedicated to Madonna Tas-Silg ("Our Lady of the Snows").

Excavation in the mid 60s of the Punic temple of Astarte and later temples and the 4th century CE monastery at this site revealed a prehistoric D-shaped setting of large blocks, the foundation of the outer wall of a 4-apse temple of the Tarxien phase. To the east the wall is interrupted by a threshold slab pierced by 3 libation holes. To the west is a concave setting which may be the foundations of a facade. These two features appear to suggest that there were 2 entrances facing in opposite directions, a strange and unique feature if correct. A 'fat lady' statue was found which had been deliberately defaced and buried in a hollow where one of the facade blocks had been removed.

This site has a very long history. The neolithic maltese temple forms the foundations. The Carthagenians/Phoenicians set up a temple to Ashtarte and even carried out human sacrifice at this site. After Roman conquest, the temple was dedicated to Venus and then ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
