Chogha Mish is a tepe or tell located on the plains of Khuzistan Province in Iran. The tepe was excavated during the 1960s with finds including early accounting tokens, cuneiform tablets and pottery portraying musicians. The earliest date for settlement is thought to be 7000 BC . Fire damaged the site around 4500 BC. A proto Elamite aspect to the site is dated to 3000 BC. The site is located north of Chogha Zanbil and south of the Dezful to Shushtar road near the modern day village of Chogha Mish. To reach it drive north from the modern village until you see the immense tepe in the fields to the right (east) of the road. From there follow mud tracks towards it then cross the open grasslands to reach the hill. The site excavations have created pits in the summit but the ground is littered with pot sherds from ancient times. The photograph opposite shows the tepe seen from the nearest I got to it on my first attempt to reach it - a 2 metre drainage ditch interposed between me and the site. This is one of my favourite sites. After studying tells at university in a early civilisations paper it was a thrill to finally stand on one of the most important ones.
