Bishapur ("Shapur's beautiful city") was founded by Shapur I in 266 AD and originally had walls ten metres high and housed between 50,000 and 80,000 people. Shapur used captured Roman soldiers to build this city and there are six rock cut reliefs in the adjacent Tang-e Chowgan Gorge (two on the south bank and four on the north bank) which depict the various important events of the Sassanian kings here. Excavations were undertaken between 1935 and 1941 with a more recent ongoing survey and excavation project in hand now. There is a small museum on the site. The site is located south of Nourabad on highway 55.
