Wadi Kabir is a tributary of Wadi 'Aqrav in the Negev highlands, an arid area with +-60mm annual rainfall. From the beginning of agricultural cultivation the desert dwellers collected water by directing the run-off rain water to cisterns dug into the soft chalk rock in a bell shape and to the terraced fields on the Wadi bed.
The cistern of Wadi Kabir is used by Bedouin and hikers up to today. It keeps water through the hot summer.
The run-off rain water directed to the cistern by dikes built on the surrounding hills.
The water is directed first to a built shaft to let the sediment sink, filtering the water before it enters the cistern .
