The name means "Writing on Stone." At around 800 AD, its peak population was possibly as high as 10,000 to 20,000 including the surrounding area. A much lower population was here at the time of the Spanish Conquest.
The area includes a cenote (sinkhole spring/well) where many artifacts have been found. There are also the ruins of a colonial church and hacienda.
