Mammoth Cave near Margaret River in West Australia is a limestone cave which has yielded many prehistoric bones which are thought to have been accumulated by humans some 40,000 years before present. Some of the bones carry tell tale breaking points, notches and burn marks as evidence of human activity. The original excavations were undertaken with the aim of seeking the bones of long extinct Australian megafauna and no concern was paid to the possibility of human occupation of the cave site. However, subsequent analysis of the bones has uncovered evidence of human activity. A notch marked bone is displayed in the cave. Dating of bones and fossils from the cave gives a period of activity from between 55,200 to 44,400 years before present pushing back the date for the first human settlement of south western Australia to some time prior to 40,000 years before present.
