Castle Ring (Rorrington)

Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill. Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound. A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

Holywell Brook (Rorrington)

Holywell Brook (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. On the far north end of Stapeley Hill, two springs close to each other emanate from the hillside, converging into one brook. For centuries these springs were venerated, even as late as the 19th Century. On Holy Thursday, there would be a procession here, and the springs decorated and dressed. Ritual dropping of pins into the water, drinking of a brew made from water and sugar, and eating of cakes were observed. All this followed by a fair in Rorrington village itself. Log Text: I love to come here and see the water issuing out of the green hillside. The two springs always make a gentle tinkle and trickling sound, so peaceful. Always here no matter what the time of year. A sort of magical place.

Stapeley Hill Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2004. A cairn on Stapeley Hill; see main entry for full details - click on blue text link to the left of the picture. A composite shot looking towards Corndon Hill, and Mitchell's Fold (out of view). It was snowing hard at this point on Midwinter Solstice Eve, and even I was questioning my sanity about being in this exposed, beautiful and dramatic landscape. A biting wind meant I did not stay here for any longer than necessary to get a shot, but on subsequent trips, it will be worth spending tim...

Egryn Abbey, Hengwm, Round Hut Excavated By Ardudwy Early Landscapes Project submitted by pab on 21st Jun 2008. Mynydd Egryn (Mount Egryn). Midway between the 2 tombs of Carneddau Hengwm and the crown-effect cairn circle of Hengwm on the slopes of Mynydd Egryn. A series of circles seem to have been recently excavated. This picture looks over the circle towards NE (the top of Moelfre bearing 11' if that helps locate it)

Log Text: Absolute pleasure to visit here on a sunny day. We usually make it at least once a year and are getting to know the layout of the sites quite well. There are more hut circles to be found in this enormous field and the field next door, but the gorse is getting quite high so it takes a bit of detective work to match them up with the records. Something to look forward to next year.

Mitchell's Fold

Mitchell's Fold submitted by w650marion on 21st Dec 2022. Mitchell’s Fold Circle for the setting sun on the winter solstice of 2022. 25 minutes before the event we had torrential rain and dark skies! But then it cleared and it was quite lovely.

Hengwm Ring Cairn

Hengwm Ring Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Sep 2007. This is a delight not to be missed. If you visit the tombs at Carneddau Hengwm, this is just a few minutes walk away. Take it in, or you'll be kicking yourself. A small ring cairn, with outward leaning stones, and an internal ring recognisable in most of the monument. It appears also to be sited so as to give an impression of being on a ridge. Comparisons with Bryn Cader Faner, which is to the north on another good long, walk, are easy to make.

Log Text: Extensive views for miles from the ramparts, despite being a low hill. Enjoyable walk on a well cared for Hillfort. The southern half and large central area is being grazed by black soay/hebridean sheep (Iron Age sheep) to keep the bracken away - it can damage the archaeology.

Cors y Gedol submitted by w650marion on 24th May 2024. Cors y Gedol in one of the lovely sunsets so frequently seen here. Photo taken July 2021 and it's hanging on my wall at home to remind me of the good things in the world. In this photo, the large stone on the right is surrounded by light. This will not not be seen now, since the recent illegal additional stonework. I have not yet heard back from CADW or Gwynedd Archaeological Trust since I informed them of the damage. Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton)

Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. Caer Caradoc, taken from a northwest angle on a lovely summer's morning. Indeed, this offers some formidable defense. If this were the place of Caratacus' last stand against the Romans, this would have indeed been something difficult to conquer, even by Roman standards. However, there is no evidence to confirm this suggestion.

The Stiperstones

The Stiperstones submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. A cairn just north east of Manstone Rock. "The Stiperstones" is the name for a hill on the far west reaches of Shropshire, well into The Welsh Marches, overlooking the Welsh border. It is the second highest hill in Shropshire, affording superb views in all directions, and having several bronze age cairns along its ridge. The cairns themselves, excepting the largest, can be quite hard to locate. At a very reductionist level, they are basically piles of stone amidst a whole ridge of piles of...
