Petit Mont

Petit Mont submitted by AlexHunger on 20th Dec 2004. Petit Mont in Arzon, dating to about 4600 BCE at the earliest, is one of the most significant Cairns in Britany, but unfortunately one of the most brutaly vandalized. In 1942, German troops built a bunker and Flak emplacement into the South East Corner of the cairn, which compeltely destroyed one of the chambers and caused the collapse of the second one pictured above, which has since been restored. The megalithic entrance is sought to be an addition from Gallo-Roman times. All pictures have be...

Pont Scethin Double Cairn

Pont Scethin Double Cairn submitted by w650marion on 6th Mar 2019. Hunting for the Pont Scethin Double Cairn is good fun for a while - it does not appear to be a double, and is not in line with the square walls of Tynewedd, a little further to the East. But scouring the area, this is the only obvious candidate! So I hope it is right!

Saint-Uzec menhir

Saint-Uzec menhir submitted by TheCaptain on 22nd Apr 2011. Its crowning glory is the way it has been christianised with the addition of a granite cross on top and carvings on its front (southern) face, which show scenes from the bible and the "roughly hewn instruments of passion". In the past it was also painted. This was all done in 1674, when the nearby chapel was built.

A composite shot looking towards Corndon Hill, and Mitchell's Fold (out of view). It was snowing hard at this point on Midwinter Solstice Eve, and even I was questioning my sanity about being in this exposed, beautiful and dramatic landscape. A biting wind meant I did not stay here for any longer than necessary to get a shot, but on subsequent trips, it will be worth spending tim...

The Stiperstones

The Stiperstones submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. A cairn just north east of Manstone Rock. "The Stiperstones" is the name for a hill on the far west reaches of Shropshire, well into The Welsh Marches, overlooking the Welsh border. It is the second highest hill in Shropshire, affording superb views in all directions, and having several bronze age cairns along its ridge. The cairns themselves, excepting the largest, can be quite hard to locate. At a very reductionist level, they are basically piles of stone amidst a whole ridge of piles of...
