Log Text: Significant views over the Mawddach estuary and then looking up to the Bwlch y Rhiwgyr ancient trackway as you reach the platform of the circle. Always a pleasure to do this walk and to visit the circle location.

Log Text: Extensive views for miles from the ramparts, despite being a low hill. Enjoyable walk on a well cared for Hillfort. The southern half and large central area is being grazed by black soay/hebridean sheep (Iron Age sheep) to keep the bracken away - it can damage the archaeology.

Mitchell's Fold

Mitchell's Fold

Mitchell's Fold submitted by w650marion on 21st Dec 2022. Mitchell’s Fold Circle for the setting sun on the winter solstice of 2022. 25 minutes before the event we had torrential rain and dark skies! But then it cleared and it was quite lovely.

Log Text: Winter Solstice sunset, a glimpse of the sun for a few minutes before it disappeared behind clouds and below the horizon. Four friendly strangers in attendance on the very cold and windy site.

Stapeley Hill Cairn

Stapeley Hill Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2004. A cairn on Stapeley Hill; see main entry for full details - click on blue text link to the left of the picture. A composite shot looking towards Corndon Hill, and Mitchell's Fold (out of view). It was snowing hard at this point on Midwinter Solstice Eve, and even I was questioning my sanity about being in this exposed, beautiful and dramatic landscape. A biting wind meant I did not stay here for any longer than necessary to get a shot, but on subsequent trips, it will be worth spending tim...

Log Text: Why here, on the mid point of the saddle, between the two highest points? A carefully chosen placement for its location. Always a lovely walk.

Holywell Brook (Rorrington)

Holywell Brook (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. On the far north end of Stapeley Hill, two springs close to each other emanate from the hillside, converging into one brook. For centuries these springs were venerated, even as late as the 19th Century. On Holy Thursday, there would be a procession here, and the springs decorated and dressed. Ritual dropping of pins into the water, drinking of a brew made from water and sugar, and eating of cakes were observed. All this followed by a fair in Rorrington village itself. Source: Stapeley Hill H...

Log Text: I love to come here and see the water issuing out of the green hillside. The two springs always make a gentle tinkle and trickling sound, so peaceful. Always here no matter what the time of year. A sort of magical place.

Castle Ring (Rorrington)

Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill. Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound. A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

Hoarstones

Hoarstones submitted by Postman on 1st Apr 2018. The sun came out at last and made the whole scene far too bright, it was almost painful to look.

Log Text: It's a sad unloved stone circle in a very boggy large field marked "private keep out". Not one I visit very often, I do remember it having official access with an info board 30 years ago. It looked better then but I can't find any photos (it was pre digital camera days)

Caer Din Hillfort submitted by w650marion on 28th Feb 2025. Entrance on the eastern side of the Hillfort, more excellent views.

Log Text: It's very close and visible from the Kerry Ridgeway single track road. If the grass verge was dry you could possibly park close to the gate of the field. But everywhere in Shropshire is permanently wet and boggy these days so it's best to park securely in a lay-by closer to Bishops Castle and enjoy the walk in along the Ridgeway.

Coed Cors y Gedol Round House

Coed Cors y Gedol Round House submitted by w650marion on 2nd Mar 2025. It appears in the early spring. The substantial ring of green stones that once was a round house. I like to go and say hello every year, it looks very welcoming. By early summer it will disappear, hidden by brambles and bracken.

Cors y Gedol Round House Settlement submitted by w650marion on 2nd Mar 2025. Close to the footpath, another ring of stones appears in early spring when the brambles and bracken have died back. It was something important once, quite substantial and there is a very welcoming atmosphere. I always say hello and we have a little chat.

Log Text: It's an old friend that appears only in early spring. We chat. I hear -
"Allo! Come inside and meet the missus. Have a nice cup of tea......."

Log Text: Relatively easy walk up from Snailbeach car park (compared with the ankle breaking southern Stiperstones path!) Excellent views down into the dingles and across the Shropshire plain.

About 2000 dateable finds (including engravings and laurel leaf stone tools) have been made due to the stratification in the dig. The second part of the tour involves climbing down long ladders to see the underground lake and cave formations.
