Log Text: Walking a Cooper's Hill Circuit of the Cotswold Way from Cranham, and on the way back to Cranham I made a diversion into the woods to find this long barrow. It’s a massive lump, now mostly cleared of trees, and built in an east to west sense, significantly bigger at the eastern end, which was no doubt the main entrance.

Log Text: Beautiful sunny morning walk from Wotton-under-Edge, up and over to Waterley Bottom down the valley to join the Cotswold Way and head up through North Nibley and up the steep Cotswold Edge to the Tyndale Monument. Then all along the edge of the hills, through beautiful bluebell, wild garlic and anemone filled woods, taking in the atmospheric old iron age fort of Brackenbury Ditches before out into the open above Wotton, dropping steeply down into the town for a pint in The Star.

Dyrham Camp submitted by Thorgrim on 22nd Aug 2003. Dyrham Camp, otherwise known as Hinton Hillfort, is best seen from high land in Dyrham Park (National Trust) Dating from the Iron Age, it was the likely site of the Battle of Dyrham in 577 AD when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that the invading Saxons under "Cuthwine and Ceawlin fought against the Britons and slew three kings, Coinmail, Condidan and Farimail at the place which is called Dyrham; and they captured three cities, Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath"

Log Text: The electric at home is off for the day so they can cut some trees, so I have a trip to Avebury for a long walk up to the polisher, down the Ridgeway and back to Avebury via Overton Down, East Kennet, West Kennet longbarrow, Silbury Hill, Waden Hill and the Avenue. Well deserved pint at the Red Lion. Beautiful day out.

The Polisher (Fyfield Down) submitted by TheCaptain on 24th Sep 2019. At long last, I have been to visit this fabulous stone.

Log Text: Yes indeed, the chap in the black fleece has gone to the polisher, and is taking all sorts of photos. I sit and wait halfway down the hill, but may still be in some of his pictures. He moves on downhill, and I see him busily taking lots of pictures of some of the stones. I take my chance and go have a good look at the polisher. Fabulous. After my 5 minutes here I walk back up to the Ridgeway and stop for a sit down and to collect my thoughts etc. noticing that the bloke in the black fleece has moved back up to the Polisher. He must have moved away to let me have my visit. As I walk on south I notice he is following behind me, but heads back towards Avebury, so was obviously only on a mission to the Polisher.

Overton Hill barrow cemetery submitted by Humbucker on 26th Dec 2017. Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery. A fantastically atmospheric place to visit, especially during the winter months when most other visitors tend to stick to Avebury or The Ridgeway itself.

Silbaby submitted by marcgreenman on 21st Sep 2020. Approaching waden hill, tree and nettle coverage can be clearly seen from here this also gives an approximate idea of the mound's size

Log Text: Walking along the fields beside the stream, get clear views of Silbaby mound, recently declared to be not prehistoric but medieval, and officially named The Waden Mound. There is a dead tree in front of it with a large hollow near the top which makes it look like an owl from a distance.

Log Text: Up the hill across the fields to West Kennet longbarrow. Its bright and clear but very windy up here, which gives good views all around. A steady stream of people are coming up here for a look, but not enough to get in the way. As I suspect is often the case, there is quite a bit of tat and suchlike inside, put there by people who should know better.

Log Text: Good views of Silbury today, so I decide to walk to it along the path in the fields north of the busy A4 road. It looks lovely in this light, sometimes in the sunshine and sometimes in the shade. With the bright green grass of the fields blowing around in the wind, it looks to be floating in a sea of green. Beautiful, and strangely compelling. From here I walk towards Avebury along the stream, but see people walking over Waden Hill, so decide to go over that and down to the Avenue, so as to approach Avebury along the West Kennet Avenue. There are fabulous views of Silbury Hill in its plain from up here, probably the best views of it there are to be had.

Log Text: Down to the bottom of Waden Hill and now head up the West Kennet Avenue towards Avebury. Its stones are positively glowing in the afternoon sunshine. This is obviously the way to approach Avebury, and even a herd of bullocks in the enclosure couldn't deter me from walking all the way up, although I did divert to the top of the area to avoid most of them, which meant not seeing the stone with the polishing grooves again. At the top of the Avenue, cross the road and enter the enormous henge through the entrance portal with the beautiful trees and enormous Barber Stone, which I make sure I get a sit down on. The stones of the inner circle are glowing in the bright sunshine, as I decide to go for a pint in the Red Lion.
