Fernacre Outlier submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2005. Fernacre Stone Circle.
Radially outwards from the large triangular stone at a distance of about 50 metres, is a pink granite stone, quite possibly an outlier of some kind.
View looking west towards Louden Hill, into the sun and haze.

Log Text: Walking around Fernacre stone circle today I counted 53 stones, plus the outlier. There are no doubt more under the grassy tufts. Its splendid here today, although the overcast sky makes it bad for photos

Log Text: A long walk round Trevose Head starting at Constantine. I cross Constantine Beach, and climb up for a look on the islet between Constantine and Booby's beaches. Is this remains of a cairn? Moving on, I drop down into Booby's Bay, hoping to see the remnants of the S.V. Carl shipwreck, but the sands have covered most of it up again.

Harlyn Bay submitted by mikeaitch on 10th Jul 2009. Harlyn Bay is my favorite place to be in the world, a view which appears to have been shared by our ancestors since ancient times.

Log Text: Walk all the way around the coast to Harlyn, where I think I pass the ancient burial grounds. Now desperate for a pint I am expecting to find the pub once up off the beach by the bridge. I found no signs of what I remember as a little museum with remains, or indeed, more annoyingly at the time after a long hot walk, the pub, as everything is all being rebuilt into lots of expensive appartments, so a good thing I did carry a pasty, but I really could haver done with a pint. Very tempting to gatecrash in on a large wedding event at marquees in the fields nearby!

Log Text: Parked at the rest area beside the A30 near Temple and walked southwest across the moor to exploor Cardinham Moor stone row. Pass beside the large pond, no doubt some mining remnant, then can see a stone standing up on the hillside. Once up there a few more come into sight. Its not straight, is it !! I follow it south to a large leaning pillar, which I later see described as Stone 1, the southern end. However, I see another stone standing over on the slopes of St Bellarmin's Tor, so went for a look, where I found not only the standing stone, but also couple more, in as good a line as the rest of the row. They also show up on the detailed OS maps (about SX 131 712). Back to the car then go for a couple of halves at the Blisland Inn.

Log Text: Standing stone, and a couple of prostrate slabs and stumps on Cardinham Moor, beyond what is described as the southern end of the stone row. From the leaning pillar which is described as Stone 1 of the stone row, I could see another stone standing to the south, so went for a look, where I found a couple more. These stones are further to the south, and in as good a line as the rest of the stone row (its not straight, is it!). They also show up on the detailed OS maps (about SX 131 712). Which begs the question. Is the leaning pillar really the southern end of the stone row? Is this stone a separate entity? Or could it be a continuation of the stone row?

Log Text: On my way down to Wadebridge today, I didn't have time for the long walk through the forest, but thought I'd try the direct ways from the Bolventor - St Cleer road down the Fowey valley. Both these ways I have seen described. Plan A. up the curvy track at Trezibbet, which is clearly seen from the raad in the valley. I asked somebody tending lambs in the barns at the bottom, and got a friendly but definite no. No way through. Private land. Plan A.2. Up either track from Goodaver, one of which shows to be a path on my OutdoorActive routeplanner. All gates and ways across the river locked. Asked a man tending a tractor. A less friendly, No. Private. So, maybe another time with half a day spare to try the forest way from the north.

Devil's Arrows submitted by Humbucker on 27th Apr 2019. All three Devils Arrows looking from the north. The light improved for a brief few minutes & the sun made a brief appearance while I was there before turning into a flat, grey evening.

Log Text: Its not too far from York, so I went for a look at the Devil's Arrows, which were easy to find. Despite a new housing estate now encroaching and the very nearby A1 and A1(M), these are still at large in fields and feel wild and free. All three stones are magnificent and monsters with interesting rainules running down them. Magnificent.

Log Text: A day to Scarborough from York, so made sure of a visit to this and Wetwang on the way. I was expecting to be slightly disappointed after all the French monster menhirs I have seen, but in actuality I was impressed. Its huge, and obviously well shaped. Only disappointment is the metal hat, and that its "caged" in the churchyard, rather than being wild and free. Also another small stone and cist grave in the corner of the churchyard. Lovely.

Log Text: Drive from Postbridge to Challacombe via the Soussons cairn stone circle, and park in a little quarry by the roadside, before heading west down to Headland Warren farm with its alpacas, then up over the mining remains to the lower end of the Challacombe stone rows. Most of the stones are showing white above the heather and it looks splendid. The bottom end is a bit of a jumble, no doubt many of the stones moved during the extensive mining here, several of which seem to have been placed in surprising positions. Up the hill to the south, its a clear treble row, which can be followed up the hill to the large 2m tall stone at the top. Can see Grimspound to the east, and over to the Warren House Inn to the west. Back to the car, and drive round to the Warren House Inn for a pint of Black Tor "Pride of Dartmoor" and a look at its everlasting fire, before going to sit outside admiring the views, where I can make out some of the stone row and Grimspound. Must be one of the best pub views in southern England. Fabulous.
White Ridge cairn

Visited: Yes on 3rd May 2022. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 2

White Ridge cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2022. There is clearly a cairn up on top of White Ridge, given away not only by the green stony circle amongst all the pale strawgrass which is everywhere else, but it also has a hollow in the centre, where it has clearly been dug in the past.
There are all around views, here looking southeast.

Log Text: After a quick drink on the cairn of the stone row, I head up onto the top of White Ridge for lunch with views all around. There are a few storms blowing in, but thankfully they all avoided me. Log Text: Getting down from White Ridge to the river and Beehive Hut is a bit tricky finding the way through the gorse here where it is very rough and largely overgrown, but once down it was easy to find. A splendid little construction and seeing it makes me think I have been here before, possibly on one of those mega expeditions in the 1980's, or perhaps I am confusing it with some of the similar orries in the Ariege Pyrénées. I see my only other person out here on the moors today, well camouflaged and fishing in the Dart, no doubt illegally as he looks very sheepish and hesitant to say hello.

Log Text: I now try to walk south from the Beehive Hut along the marked bridleway beside the Dart, but its hard going, very rough and largely overgrown, I find it to be much easier higher up on the moorland. South over the top of Hartland Tor with good views south towards Bellever Tor and Roundy Park settlement clear on the other side of the river. Onwards down to the Dart again, through the Hartyland estate to Postbridge, having a look at the old clapper bridge before getting a pint of Jail Ale in the welcoming East Dart Hotel bar.
