Log Text: Drive out to the car park at St Govan's for a quick look at the chapel and cliffs. Quite a few people there, and it seems like the steps down to the chapel have been made easier than I remember.

Devil's Quoit (Stackpole) submitted by Horatio on 19th May 2019. Access is easy to find if approaching from Stackpole warren, after entering the double gate enclosure from the woods, before leaving through the second gate in front of you. look right and you'll see a side gate that leads to the stone.

Log Text: Circular walk from Bosherston to Broadhaven beach beside the lily ponds, then around the cliffs to Stackpole Head and Barrafundle beach. I then head westwards up through the dunes and woodland of Stackpole Warren to find the cross track which takes me to the Devil's Quoit. A nice stone in the afternoon sun, which has eluded me before. I head back over the eight arch stone bridge and around the lily ponds to Bosherston, for a well earned pint at the St Govan's Inn.

Log Text: Park at Bosherston, then walk alongside the lily ponds to Broadhaven beach, then up onto the cliffs and around to the east to Stackpole Head, passing some tremendous geology, with sea stacks, steep sided coves, arches, caves and round holes. I later notice on the Portal that the thumb of land sticking out from Stackpole Head, Mowingword Promontory, is included as a promontary fort. Has to be said that I saw no evidence of any fortifications, but didn't look too hard.

Log Text: On the way back to the car, I notice "Cross Stones" marked on the map, so go look for them in the playing field beyond the churchyard. What looks like two stubs of once larger stones, a cross carving can be seen on the larger of the two stones, but difficult to see anything on the smaller stone in the shade.

Log Text: Travelling to Tenby and notice a standing stone marked just off the A477, so go have a look. The A477 has been rebuilt and almost passes over the top of this stone, so park in the village and walk along the track under the new road and there it is in the field ahead. Is that really it? looks way too small compared to the pictures I have seen. Yep, it is. Now I guess the art is to get pictures which make it look bigger!

Log Text: Much of the city walls can be traced, and now surround the park. I didn't have time to see much of these, but I did go to look at the main remaining stone section, which somehow survived demolition. Most of the Abbey was built using the roman wall and city stone, brick and tile.

Log Text: From the museum, walk across Verulamium Park for a look at the covered mosaic floor from a large house, complete with hypercaust flues etc underneath. A feature is the mosaic panel which was built wrongly, at a 45 degrtee rotation to what it should have been!

Striking tableux bring the archaeology to life, but the stars of the museum are the gigantic mosaic floors. Go there - it's a must! Log Text: Stop off to have a look at the Verulamium roman city remains, when on my way back from Essex. I haven't been here since primary school, and I still remember the Roman fort I made out of cardboard. What an excellent museum, with some tremendous finds and displays. Genuine roman wall paintings and superb mosaics incorporated into the displays.

At the top of Lord Hereford's Knob used to be a walkers cairn, but this has now been flattened, leaving a sort of circular base of stones, in which at one point I am sure is the remains of a cist, with two side set stones creating a right angle visible at ground level.

Log Text: A blowy and blustery bank holiday Monday trip to the Black Mountains, we head up the Gospel Pass to park, then walk southwest along the top to Lord Hereford's Knob (Twmpa) and on to Rhos Dirion for a sit down and lunch. At the top of Lord Hereford's Knob used to be a walkers cairn, but this has now been flattened, leaving a sort of circular base of stones, in which at one point I am sure is the remains of a cist, with two side set stones creating a right angle visible at ground level. This would then make it just like all the other prominent tops along the Beacons / Black Mountain ridge. Back the way we came along the ridgeline to the car, thankfully we didn't get soaked, but it was very windy. Drive down to Llanthony Priory for a pint. Lovely day.

Better known as the Penrhiw Burial Chamber this damaged tomb has a large rectangular capstone resting on 3 uprights. It was re-erected some years ago.
Shots from other angles would have been taken but a small herd of highly inquisitive bullocks is not conducive to creative composition or a steady camera hand!
