Cornridge SE
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 7th Jun 2004

Cornridge SE submitted by TheCaptain on 7th Jun 2004. Corn Ridge cairn, Dartmoor, Devon SX551891
The remains of a nice large cairn can be found at the summit of Corn Ridge, about 10m diameter. There is the usual depression in its middle, but otherwise it seems fairly intact, with some quite nice stones forming its outside shape. There is also what seems to be the remains of a circle of stones surrounding it with about 2 metres extra diameter.

Corringdon Ball submitted by thecaptain on 24th Oct 2004. Corringdon Ball site overview.
This is the view looking southwest from Brent Fore Hill, overlooking the Corringdon Ball site. I have tried to mark out the various sites.
In the background is the Butterdon Hill to Piles Hill ridge with its enormous number of sites. Again, I have tried to mark out the various rows and features which would be seen in this view.

Log Text: The remains of Corringdon Ball chambered tomb are marked on the map as Long Barrow, and it is situated on the saddle of land between Corringdon Ball and Brent Fore Hill, not far from the cairn at the head of the Brent Fore row. This was once one of the largest monuments on the moor, but has been badly damaged, with a track cut through its northern part, and most of the southern end destroyed. Several large stones remain at the south end, which would once have formed a very large chamber. These are now nearly all fallen and broken, with just a semblance of any chamber recognisable.

Log Text: Walk from South Brent up onto the moor around Corringdon Ball. Just as we get to the longbarrow and other megalithic sites my phone malfunctions and packs up. Getting very fed up with this decide to give up looking for any more old stones and just continue on with the walk up to Shipley Bridge.

Log Text: I head down to the west and back to the lower track in order to find the Cors Y Carneddau circle. At first I found lots of stones all seemingly scattered around at random, with nothing obvious representing a circle. Some stones are standing proud of the ground over by the wall. But nothing that shouts circle to me. Having a more detailed search of the area, I was at one point heading back to the east, and then an arc of stones came into view. Was this it? Looking closer and several more stones were found under the surface, and for sure this is the remains of a circle, perhaps 10 stones remaining in the circumference, with a diameter of 15 metres or so. The giveaway to being in the right place is a steel bar sticking out of the ground, probably once a fence post, nearby to the two most obvious stones.

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX643916
On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row.
The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place...

This is a view looking downhill from the cairn. As usual, the larger stones are near the cairn, and they generally get smaller the further away from the cairn they are, with a few notable exceptions. Each of the rows has a large slab placed across the rows at its end by the cairn.

Log Text: Leaving St Pierre towards La Vacquerie, take the first left after a kilometre, and then left again with signs towards a council works area. After 1.5 kilometres, the road gets to the top of a hill. Just below the top of the hill, there is a track to the west, with what looks like, and is marked on the maps as a menhir. It is however a sculpture of a prehistoric man from about the year 1910, and his features can be made out when looking closely.
About 150 metres along the track, it turns to the left, and on the top of the hill is this nice dolmen, restored in the 1970s. Still within its mound of stones, its a sort of double decker, with a high main chamber preceded by a lower entry corridor. The main chamber is 3 metres long, 1.5 metres wide and high enough to stand in. It has two good side stones, a nice back stone and a lovely overhanging capstone on top. In front of theis is a 4 or 5 metre long entry passageway, 0.5 metres wide and 1 metre high, and capped with two capstones. It opens towards the southwest at about 220°. A nice place to visit up here in the empty causse.

Log Text: Less than 100 metres away from Coste-Caude dolmen 1, to the southeast, can be found another dolmen. I just walked about a bit, and there it was. It still has a large pile of stones surrounding it, and the chamber has its side stones and backstone, but no capstone. The chamber is 2.5 metres by 1.5 metres, and also opens up to the southwest at 220°. I suspect there are several more dolmens around here.

Coste-Rouge Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 7th Oct 2005. Coste-Rouge Dolmen on a sunny, but cold and windy afternoon in September.
Unfortunately, to see this dolmen nowadays, the full guided tour of the abbey has to be taken - there are no longer any open visits round the grounds because it has been made into an animal park.
But its worth it.

Log Text: Within the grounds of the Saint-Michel-de-Grandmont priory, in the mountains above Lodève in Hérault, this is possibly the most famous dolmen in the world. The dolmen is superbly situated on the edge of the hill, with massive views over the plains to the south.
The chamber is made on all sides with large slabs, which is covered by a large capstone which substantially overhangs on all sides. Unusually, the capstone rests on the front and back stones, rather than the two side slabs. The most magnificent thing about this dolmen though is the wonderful carved "oven door" entranceway, looking very much like a sort of Tom and Jerry mousehole.
The remains of the cairn and its entrance passageway can be seen around the dolmen, the stones of the cairn being red volcanic rocks rather than the brownish slabs of the chamber, which is from where the dolmen got its name. Around the outside of this is a surrounding peristalith of pale rocks. The chamber is about 3 metres in length, by 2 metres wide.
Within the grounds of St Michel de Grandmont Priory. There are no longer any free visits round the grounds, and I can only do the guided tour of the priory and grounds after. They say its something to do with animals in the park, and its quite disappointing. I do the full tour, its a half price day, so its €5 and 2 hours of visit. Despite being led to believe I would see all the dolmens, I only got to see the Coste-Rouge dolmen and the odd stones, and not the other two dolmens within the grounds.
