Domaine de Castillon submitted by theCaptain on 30th Dec 2013. View across the swollen river to the northern end of the hill where the C17th Chateau has been built on top of the ancient site.
It was such horrible wet weather, I wasn't going to explore away from the road.

Log Text: Stopped off for a quick look while travelling home after Christmas at my sisters. The weather was foul and everything completely sodden, so didn't spend any time exploring other than driving around the local roads. One to come back to sometime, for a better look for some of the ramparts, and a look round the chateau gardens.

Log Text: It annoys me that I have no photos of this from my visit in 1998. I had another look through my old boxes of photos and there was nothing at all that day of my cycling holiday, although I could have sworn differently. Perhaps my camera was left in my tent as we visited it on a day ride out from Oudenaaard. Very unlikely, I could swear I had pictures of a local windmill and the bar where we had lunch, but nothing was found.

Visited: Yes on 11th Jun 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 2

Sittaford Stone Circle submitted by theCaptain on 12th Jun 2014. With the weather turned nice, I took a day off work to walk out to the newly found Sittaford Tor stone circle.
This is a plot from my GPS showing not only the track of my walking around of the circle, but I also created a waypoint for each stone, which are plotted as the little flags.

Log Text: With the weather turned nice, I took a day off work to walk out to the newly found Sittaford Tor stone circle, starting out from Fernworthy Reservoir. Having planned the trip in advance, so knowing where to look, the circle was very easy to find, although very wet and boggy. All of the stones have been dug around so they are no longer buried in the mire. Excellent.

Log Text: Visited this site yesterday, and remarkably found it very easily, although an episode with a gate caused much amusement. Other than seeing details here, could only find notes which call it a disputed site. First thoughts are blimey, its a big old longbarrow with fallen chamber at SE end. Second thoughts are maybe not, mch of this is natural.... Look closer, and the leaning stone beyond the big capstone is clearly not natural, and was once standing, probably as a support to the capstone. So, my thoughts are this is a true ancient site, using what was naturally available as a starting point. I have since read that there are many cupmarks in the capstone - always good to have reason for another visit.

Log Text: A fairly new and interesting megalithic interpretation centre in the old railway station in the small town of Mora. The main room has a large wooden interpretation of the local landscape, with various chambers and areas within it containing various finds and information of neolithic life and the the local megaliths. I was particularly taken by the displays of the decorated neolithic plaques, many of which have been found with the local burials. The girl working at the centre was very friendly and helpful when we visited, helping me with suggestions of which local megalithic sites I should be visiting.

Log Text: Hadn't planned on visiting or knowing of this site before visiting the Mora centre, where we were told of it by the girl there. As it was on the way to Pavia, just off the main road a couple of kilometers outside town, we stopped for a look. Re-erected in recent years, there is a video of this in the Mora centre. There is a single large stone almost 4 metres tall standing in a part circle of half a dozen smoothed and rounded smaller stones. Just nearby across the track is a further smaller stone, and approx a hundred metres distant to the northeast is a further outlier.

Log Text: Chapel built into a huge Anta (dolmen) now in a square in the sleepy village of Pavia. The chapel is locked shut, but has a gate of iron railings allowing us to view inside. The nearby Café du Dolmen is also closed, and a few old chaps sit nattering in the shade of a small shelter on the square. Difficult to photograph in the bright sun, as it is mostly in shadow.

Log Text: Newly built (opened 2019) visitor centre, shop and interpretive trail, at the edge of the village of Guadalupe on the Rue do Cromeleque, before the road turns to a dirt track leading out to the Almendres sites. As well as the Almendres megaliths, the shop and building is heavily influenced by the local cork bark tradition, and features many cork products.
I could have spent much more time here, but we had to get to Evora to check in to the guesthouse.

Log Text: At long last, I have been to visit this fabulous stone. On this beautiful September fay, I sat and had lunch with the Polisher. I must have been here best part of an hour, watching the Red Kites circling, and didn't see another soul. It's really moving sat here, just where people would have been sat 5000 years ago.
