Ysbyty Cynfyn Stone Circle

Ysbyty Cynfyn Stone Circle submitted by Johnny on 10th Oct 2001. Ysbyty Cynfyn "Stone Circle" (SN 752 791) This readily accessible site is situated alongside the A4120 running south from Ponterwyd towards Devil's Bridge. The circle is not marked as an antiquity on recent OS maps but the church itself is easily found. Despite recent dissenting opinion, it has generally been accepted that this is an example of the early Christian Church adopting an ancient site, in this case an embanked Bronze Age stone circle, presumably in an attempt to "des...

Willy Howe

Willy Howe submitted by DavidRaven on 9th Jun 2003. Part of the 'Great Yorkshire Barrows' group. To say that these have been called by some, 'the ancestors' of the mighty Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, you'd think a little more would be made of them! Reckoned to be as old as Duggleby Howe, and a similar size: seven and a half meters high and thirty six and a half meters in diameter. Attempts at finding its secrets in 1857 and again thirty years later yielded nothing. A pit about nine feet deep was discovered but was bereft of objects or human ...

White Cairn chambered cairn One of many monuments called ‘White Cairn’ in this area and not to be confused with another White Cairn located only 1.2km to the NW! This particular example is listed as a must see site in the areas Archaeosights leaflet. It can be found in the forest east of Glentrool Village at NX 35257838. It is not easy to find the right access to this forest but we went from NGR NX35807846 - a patch of rough ground between two cottages. You will find a green post wit...

Log Text: I was there late evening, a rushed visit due to the next day's weather forecast being so unpleasant. I'm glad I went. Perhaps it's because dusk was upon me that the ambience was quite impressive, and the site's structure is unusual. I'm dead against grouse shoooting, but it would be sort-of helpful good if the heather in and around the circle were burnt again! V diff to photograph without a wide lens (and a long pole).

Weston Camp submitted by SumDoood on 21st Mar 2017. Taken from the southern edge of the enclosure. Notice 2/d in from the left is Allt yr Esgair, the location of another hillfort. The lake is Llyn Safaddan / Llyn Langors / Llangorse Lake.

Log Text: This location (where did that name Weston Camp come from?), is I think a settlement, not a hillfort. My 1:25000 map showed it as a Settlement. Both of these (hill)forts were perhaps "defended enclosures", but this is significantly smaller than the adjacent Llanfilo Camp.

Superb location for views of the Brecon Beacons which surely were of significance to the builders, and of other hillforts in the area.
