Kemp Howe

Kemp Howe submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th Mar 2004. This is the remains of what must have been a beautiful stone circle. The stones are pink granite and have a lovely glow. Unfortunately the ambience has been shattered by the "wonderful" victorians, who built the railway on top of it.

There are also two bronze age burial mounds and two ancient springs nearby, one called Pike-eel Well, and the other called Elfa Well, where fairies are to be found....

Newton Reigny Enclosure

Newton Reigny Enclosure submitted by Anne T on 26th Nov 2017. Standing at the gate to the field containing part of this enclosure, looking north. A series of low banks and ditches can be seen, largely to the left hand side of the small cluster of sheep. Not a huge amount to be seen, but this site is believed to be of Dark Ages origin, according to the Curator of Carlisle Museum.

Great Burney

Great Burney cairn Grid ref SD26401 85541 turned out to be several cairns in what looked like a settlement.Some were exposed but others were under grass but the outlines could be seen. the cairns were tucked in under the fell side and commanded a view across to Lowick High Common (now the site of a wind farm) and the Duddon Estuary.

Log Text: If the weather is other than warm and dry and settled, try to find an approach on grass. There is one on the south side. Limestone pavement can be very slippery. It was covered in black ice at the time of my visit.

Let me know if you find a quern stone on, near or within the site.
