Log Text: This is a large Middle Woodland site of 8 conical or rounded mounds spread out over a 80-90 acre field. It is located at milepost 286 of the Natchez Trace in MS, on the north bound side of the highway. The mounds today range in height from 2 to 18 ft. Generally speaking, the tallest mounds are closest to the road. Four mounds were either partially or fully excavated in the 1960s by the NPS.
There is a large car park overlooking the site, complete with interpretation and rest rooms. Although 4-5 mounds can be seen from the lot, they are a considerable distance away so binoculars are helpful. Trails interconnect many of the mounds, but there is a fair amount of walking involved. A circuit of Mounds A-D, the four closest, was just under a mile including the return trip to the parking area. I did not visit the others.

Log Text: Part of the Eastern Section of Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park in Pinson TN. The state park hosts what is likely the largest Middle Woodland mound site in the US. An extensive trail system in the Eastern Section links Mounds 28, 29, 30 and the Eastern Citadel.
The easiest access point for this trail system is in the Group Lodge Area, which hosts a large parking lot with a trailhead and restroom facilities. The Group Lodge Area is on the left about 0.4 miles beyond the state park entrance gate. The Outer Loop trail heads east from there to Mound 28 and the other Eastern Section features.

Log Text: For parking and trailhead access, see Pinson Mounds - Mound 28.
This is a large (semi) circular earthen enclosure in the Eastern Section of Pinson. It surrounds Mound 29, and Mound 30 lies just outside of and SE of the enclosure. The diameter of the semi-circular enclosure is 366 m and it encompasses approximately 6 square km. The northern and western sides are largely intact, whereas the eastern and southern parts are eroded and fragmented.
To get to the northern section of the enclosure from Mound 28, follow the Outer Loop trail south for about 0.15 mile to a side trail on the left. The side trail leads to an obvious embankment and gap in about 500 ft.

Log Text: This is classified as Middle Woodland rectangular platform mound lying just to the SE and outside of the Eastern Circular Enclosure. However, you would never know, as it has suffered much erosion over the centuries.
To get there, be prepared for a long-ish but mostly flat walk (from the Group Lodge parking area, it is about 1.6 miles round trip). First, see the visitor logs for trail access to Mound 28 and from there to the north wall of the Eastern Citadel. Once at the northern side of the enclosure, follow the wall about 300 ft east to an obvious gap with trail signage. Follow that trail into the enclosure south past Mound 29. Here the enclosure embankment is nearly flat and Mound 30 is visible about 300-400 ft SE of Mound 29.

To get there, be prepared for a long-ish but mostly flat walk (from the Group Lodge parking area, it is about 1.5 miles round trip). First, see the visitor logs for trail access to Mound 28 and from there to the north wall of the Eastern Citadel. Once at the northern side of the enclosure, follow the wall about 300 ft east to an obvious gap with trail signage. Follow that trail south for 100-200 yds. Pinson Mounds - Ozier Mound submitted by symbionspacesuit on 14th Feb 2010. Ozier (Mound 5)
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Ozier Mound (Mound 5) is one of several sites in the Western Section of the park. It is a rectangular platform mound, second in height only to Sauls' Mound.
Getting there is a bit obscure due to lack of signage. The easiest way is from Route 197 outside the park. Follow Route 197 east and look for the Pinson Reforestation Complex sign, which is about a mile west of the park entrance. Take a right and head south about a half mile to a dirt parking lot. There is a kiosk here with a trailhead that leads west in 100-200 yards to a very large, obvious Mound.
If you are within the park, follow the one way loop road nearly to the park exit. About 100 yds before the exit, take the dirt road on the left (unsigned and easy to miss) and follow it back about a mile south and west past a maintenance area to the dirt parking lot and trail head referenced above.

Log Text: A very tall, steep Middle Woodland mound located in Florence AL near the north banks of the Tennessee River. Originally there was an 8 foot semi-circular embankment around the mound, but it was destroyed in the 19th or 20th century. The mound is now in a heavily developed industrial area within a fenced area. An adjacent city-owned museum provides a wealth of information on the site.
The mound is located a short distance east of Route 72 on a side street right after you cross over the Tennessee River from south to north. A paved driveway leads to a small parking area right after the museum.

Log Text: A Mississippian mound site in Hamilton AL. Parking is in a small paved lot on Old Indian Mound Rd at the corner of a cultivated field about 800 ft east of US Hwy 278. There is an interpretive sign in the parking area.
The mounds are accessible via a mostly paved trail proceeding north and east about 1/2 mile around the field perimeter to the three mounds which are adjacent to the Buttahatchee River. The mounds can also be viewed via a good pair of binoculars from the lot.

The U.S. Forest Service owns two of the mounds including the largest 17-foot-high Mound I. Both are open to public visitation. Archeological excavations conducted at the site in 1991-1992 by Mississippi State University revealed the foundation remains of a ceremonial temple or elite residence that once stood atop Mound

Log Text: Site is as described. The portion managed by the Forest Service contains two extant mounds, including Mound 1 the largest in the group. Mound 1 is pretty close to its original rectangular platform shape. The adjacent Mound 2 looks like it has been damaged by plowing but still quite visible. I was unable to find any obvious evidence of the remaining 3 mounds across the street.
There is a parking lot right next to Mound 2 and Mound 1 is a very short distance away.

Bynum submitted by bat400 on 6th Sep 2012. Bynum Mounds and Village site. There were originally six burial mounds (the smaller ones much eroded by the plow.) All six were fully excavated and the two largest mounds were reconstructed .

Log Text: Bynum is one of a half dozen or so mound sites spread out along the Natchez Trace, an ancient animal, Native American, and Euro American trail (now a highway) that traverses much of the state of Mississippi and parts of Alabama and Tennessee. The Trace is managed by the National Park Service. Commercial and residential development is prohibited within roughly several hundred yards east and west of the route, resulting in a forever wild strip of land that runs for over 300 miles through the Deep South part of the US.
Access to Bynum is via a short circular driveway that runs to the east at about mile marker 232.4 of the Trace. The two remaining mounds are easily viewed at a distance from the parking area, but I believe a paved walkway gets very close to the mounds. So it's accessible to the mobility impaired. .

Log Text: Tendal is a single rectangular platform mound site, located 50-100 ft north of US Route 80 and just west of the Tensas River. A currently occupied house was built on top of the mound and therefore the site is private. However you can park within 100 ft of it, at the corner of US Route 80 and Tendal Rd in the front lot of a currently unused commercial building. An interpretive sign is in the front yard of the residence.

Schicker Mound submitted by stonetracker on 9th Mar 2025. The house is sitting on and beneath what is left of the Schicker Mound. The mound was likely twice this height originally before house construction.

Log Text: This site consists of a single platform mound. A house with cellar was built on it in 1926 and I believe what you see now is the original dwelling. It is currently occupied so the site is private and can only be viewed from 100 yds away. The location is in Tallulah, LA in a residential area on the west side of Mississippi St. I found it easier to park on Desoto St, a nearby side street, and walk across Mississippi St 100 ft to the site.

Log Text: This mound is very close to Schicker Mound and on neighboring La Salle St. On-street parking is available on La Salle right next to the mound or across the street. It's also easy walking distance from Schicker. Unusually for Louisiana, you can walk right up to the mound as it abuts the sidewalk even though it's private.

Log Text: This was originally a 12-mound site, but cultivation has completely leveled the smaller peripheral mounds. The site is now on a large private farm set well back from the road and only 5-6 mounds remain visible above the surface. The closest extant mound is about 500 ft south of LA State Highway 581 and the tallest mound is 1000 ft south of the roadway. As with many Louisiana mound sites, no dedicated parking is available so the only option is to pull off briefly on private field roads. There is one next to the interpretive sign for the site on Mound Rd. There are other field roads east and west of this location.

Log Text: Like nearby Transylvania Mounds, parking is tricky here. I was unwilling to park a rental car near the interpretive sign in the adjacent historic cemetery as it would have involved crossing a ditch in who knows what condition. Your mileage may vary, but I was able to find a conveniently vacant property about 200 yds east near the jct of State Routes 581 and 881 and parked in the driveway. Then I walked 200 yds west down Route 581 to the site.
The mound literally abuts the highway as it was cut in half by road construction.

Archaeological reconstruction of the Fitzhugh Mound Complex in Louisiana from the mound encyclopedia. The elevated walkway (terrace) running from the right middle to the upper center was 2700-feet long and 75-feet wide. The large platform mound by it has a base of 250 x 160 feet and was 30-feet high. The site is dated to AD 1200 and only 2 mounds remain today.

Log Text: The site is very scenic, thus the Superb ambience rating. Unfortunately all that remains of the 7 mound site are two small mounds. The unusual elevated causeway is also long gone.
Mound D just so happens to now be the site of a still-used cemetery so I parked there. It is about 200 yds south of LA hwy 602 on a firm dirt road suitable for most vehicles. The interpretive signage is located a little farther south at the corner of Route 602 & Busby Rd.

Log Text: I had visited this site a few years ago as Mound A is in a convenient state roadside park area with bathroom facilities. It's also on the way to more northerly MS mound sites like Jaketown and Winterville.
Anyway I just stopped by to check out the latest improvements. The site's outdoor interpretive signage provided by Mississippi State Univ has always been great, but now they've added some replicas of ceramics found during excavations to an exhibit inside the visitor center. This plus more interpretation inside and improved signage outside. With many mound sites neglected and even derelict, it's good to see some serious effort put forth towards visitor education in an easily accessible and well-preserved site.
Note: There was a Mound B north of this site in a private neighborhood that I looked for some yrs ago with no access. I'll see if I can find more info.

Log Text: These Mississippian mounds fall into the same category as a number of others that can only be viewed from long range, e.g. Metcalfe, Stoneville, Leland, and Mayersville. All are privately owned and on either agricultural land or large compounds set far back from the nearest public road. Unless permission is secured by the landowner, be prepared to shoot photos or videos from several 100 ft or more away. The best and closest viewing spot I found was on Furr Rd in Percy at approximately 33.09367, -90.85677 which lies about 800 ft north of the mound. There is a safe parking on a field road, where I captured most of the images. The two remaining mounds are on cultivated land and in good condition. The rest have been reduced to subsurface by cultivation.

The best viewing spot I found was about at the midpoint of Metcalf Road which lies about 1000 ft west of the mound. There are no shoulders for safe parking so I had to park on a nearby field (dirt) road and walk about 100 ft.
The mound is on a farm just to the east of a large tan shed (see images). It is in good condition.
