Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Nov 2024. Whitby Abbey September 2024, in its bleak windblown position on top of the hill. I found the weathering shapes and patterns on the stone to be fascinating. The museum was also good to visit with many items of ancient historic interest.

Ring of Brodgar submitted by Dodomad on 12th Apr 2025. Back in 2022, historian Tristan Hughes visited Orkney to film part of the Mysteries of Prehistoric Scotland. Although the three programmes were initially for History Hit TV subscribers, the full series can now be viewed by all as a single, two-hour long documentary. In it we hear from, among others, Professor Jane Downes, the director of the UHI Institute, at the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae; Dr Antonia Thomas at the Unstan stalled cairn; Nick Card at the Ness of Brodgar; Roy Towers on Gr...

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino de Santiago de Chile

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino de Santiago de Chile submitted by davidmorgan on 4th Aug 2019. These remarkable wooden statues were placed on top of tombs in ancient Mapuche cemeteries. They reflect the spirit (am) of those buried there and are intended to assist them in their journey to the afterlife. Chiefs and great warriors were sent to the east after death, to roam among the volcanoes of Kalfumapu, the "blue land". All others went to the west, to eat bitter potatoes beyond the sea.

Log Text: main buildings destroyed by fire in October 2019. Will be reconstructed but this will take years. See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuri_Castle#2019_fire. A tragic loss, it had taken decades to re-build it after the destruction during WWII. We were lucky to visit it just days before the fire – one of the most spectacular reconstructions I have ever seen.

The Machrie Moor Stone Circles are located at the end of a 1-1/2 mile track that is off of the A841 (some 200 yards south of the bridge where the main road crosses the Machrie Water) and three miles north of Blackwaterfoot in the western part of the Isle of Arran in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Züschen Galeriegrab

Züschen Galeriegrab submitted by AlexHunger on 6th Jun 2006. Limestone Chambered tomb with soul hole, measuring about 16.5 Meters by 2.5 Meters found in 1894. In recent years a woden shed with metal bars was built to protect the site and it's engravings. These consist of fishebone rows and "Wine Glass" shaped cups. The shed is not ideal but decent enough photos can be made while the protection is certainly welcome. No cap complete stones remain.

Swinside

Swinside submitted by Energyman on 27th Sep 2017. I've just re-read the initial description, and have to amend it slightly. The circle is not quite complete - There were originally 57 stones, 3 are missing, making 54. This took me two days to work out, going from Jack Morris-Eyton's originals. The drone picture here I just managed with a rickety, unstable lash-up.

Wayland's Smithy

Wayland's Smithy submitted by TimPrevett on 19th May 2017. Collage showing a remarkable encounter with a mouse at Wayland's Smithy at its entrance. This mouse and I had each others' eye contact for about a minute before it dove between the horizontal facing stones. One of those happenings on visiting ancient sites which on one level is mere fortune and synchronicity but on another feels very meaningful and profound. A little video of this on my instagram account here.
