Old Stone Fort

Old Stone Fort submitted by bat400 on 30th Jul 2006. Entrance to "Old Stone Fort." Twin earthen mounds flanked a rectangular earth and stone work enclosure. This enclosure opened into the interior of the "Fort" to the left at the far end. You can see the back wall of the entry "room." These enclosure walls were much higher when first built. Portions of the ground were paved as for a walkway. Stitched Photo by bat400, 13 Jul 2006.

America's Stonehenge

America's Stonehenge submitted by thecaptain on 14th Dec 2003. The sacrificial table at Mystery Hill, also known as America's Stonehenge, near Salem, New Hampshire. Is it an ancient site or a fairly modern construction ? They say its over 4000 years old, but who built it ? When I visited 10 to 15 years ago it was a really horrible wet day, so I didnt get many pictures. And I have to say, that despite their best efforts to assure me that carbon dating of objects prove it to be 4000 years old, the stones just didnt look weathered enough to me.

The photo is taken from the low, broken-cross-shaped mound in the center. It is very difficult to get photos that give any sense of the whole at an earthwork this large.
