Log Text: To help us enjoy both an evening visit and be close enough to just walk up for a dawn attempt at the sunrise/moonset double, we used the Camping & Caravan site just at the foot of Maiden Castle itself.
This meant a fairly easy & short walk up to the western entrance - what a delight to have somewhere to leave the campervan & just walk up to such a magnificent location..
For information, the sunrise was about 7.30, with the moon not setting until just after 9am - not often you can catch 2 such lovely times with such a short interval between them. Checking the great Photographers Ephemeris website helps to make me decide whether it might be worth putting an early alarm on - highly recommend it as a source of timing information..

Hambledon Hill hillfort submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jan 2005. December 2002. Looking towards the south at the impressive west-facing flank of Hambledon hill. The ramparts are clearly visible in this picture, and the grazing sheep give a sense of scale. The ramparts in the foreground drop away sharply - presumably as the result of a landslip.

Black Down (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Jan 2021. "The Black Down stone circle consists of five ‘totems’ built from local Forest Marble stone. One is aligned with true north and the other four with the midwinter and midsummer solstice sunrises and sunsets. In clear conditions at each of these times, the Sun’s full disc shines through an opening in one of the totems, lighting up a central rock of Portland stone."
"The circle is part of a larger project that finds creative ways to navigate and explore the South Dorset Ridgeway. A second ...

Troy Town Maze submitted by pab on 26th Oct 2010. Troy Town Maze: showing the extent of erosion in June 2009. This is the view looking west, with Bishop Rock Lighthouse visible top left, about 4 miles away.
In such as exposed location, it must be very difficult for the soil and turf to recover from the damage caused by visitors tracing the curves.

Wingletang Down submitted by PAB on 29th Apr 2020. Heather-covered western ridge on Wingletang Down, St Agnes.
I THINK (!) that this is the feature described by Historic England as follows:
"The monument includes three prehistoric platform cairns, two of which are linked by a prehistoric linear boundary, situated on the eastern part of Wingletang Down on St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly. The two cairns linked by the linear boundary are situated 33m apart on a NNE-SSW axis; the third cairn is situated 12m north east of the southern cairn. E...

St Thomas's Well (Wymondham)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Norfolk)
Visited: Yes on 9th Apr 2007

St Thomas's Well (Wymondham) submitted by pab on 9th Apr 2007. No-one at the Abbey seemed to be aware of the location of the Well when I visited just before Easter!
I must admit though that I had not made the connection in my own head between St Thomas' Well and the fact that he Abbey is in a street called Becketswell Road..even though I had lived in the town for several years.
The temporary tennant of this property (who also had heard nothing of a well) was kind enough to let me take these pictures, but it is on private land.

Little Walsingham Holy Well

Country: England (Norfolk)
Visited: Yes on 10th Apr 2007

Little Walsingham Holy Well submitted by pab on 10th Apr 2007. Holy Well, located next to the ruins of Abbey of St Mary, in Little Walsingham. Site is now part of the Abbey Museum grounds, so a charge is payable (£3, in April 2007). It was not possible for me to remove the cover to have a proper look, but perhaps someone making a pre-arranged visit might be allowed to do so.
The main well was approximately 5m by 5m, with 2 circular wells very close by. There is scope for confusion as to whether this is the 'real well', as there is another one withi...

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Northumberland)
Visited: Would like to visit

Lady's Well (Holystone) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 5th Dec 2004. During the first half of the 12th century a Priory was built at Holystone as a home for some Augustinian Canonesses. Since then the well has been known as Lady's Well after these religious ladies who cared for the well right up to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. They are said to have added the cross that reflects so splendidly in the water.

Devils Quoits submitted by pab on 12th Mar 2014. Part of the ramparts in the south-eastern segment, showing the extent of the rabbit impact - but also showing just how impressive the stones themselves are!
In any other setting, and without the noise and smells, this would be a delight. Hopefully we just visited at a bad time, and in a few years things will be far better - so please don't give up on this place!
