Gawton's Well

Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well. The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...

Gors Fawr Stone Circle

Gors Fawr Stone Circle submitted by pab on 11th Jan 2009. Gors Fawr, frozen in time! Normally very boggy (as its name means in Welsh), the current cold spell has made even the mud walkable on! This picture, taken 10 Jan 09, reminded me of mountainman's recent comments (in a forum near you!) about moving stones from here to Stonehenge over the ice & snow. It may not have worked over grass a couple of years ago, but given a run of harsh winters, I can see it being a different prospect.

Gwal y Filiast

Gwal y Filiast submitted by pab on 30th Aug 2006. Ancient Track alongside Gwal y Filiast. The 5 point score for 'ambience' is very well deserved - it brought a real smile to my face when this delightful site came into view along a path which had clearly been used for centuries. The alternative name mentioned elsewhere of Dolwilym (William's Meadow) just doesn't do the place justice! The surrounding area has been sensitively cleared to let the site breathe since PaulM's initial picture.

Hambledon Hill hillfort

Hambledon Hill hillfort submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jan 2005. December 2002. Looking towards the south at the impressive west-facing flank of Hambledon hill. The ramparts are clearly visible in this picture, and the grazing sheep give a sense of scale. The ramparts in the foreground drop away sharply - presumably as the result of a landslip.

Hardings Down West

Hardings Down West submitted by pab on 5th Jul 2013. The south-westerly edge of Hardings Down West, with sem providing both scale and perspective.... This hillfort is very deceptive - from the lane it looks fairly impressive, but its sheer scale is only appreciated when you reach the ramparts. If you really can't enjoy this delightful location during the Portal event arranged as part of the Festival of Archaeology, follow the COFLEIN link on the site page to see a very impressive aerial image.
