Dolmen dit de la Madeleine submitted by hewpop on 25th Sep 2007. Sainte-Madeleine dolmen aka. Pierre Madeleine.
Actually on the southern-most tip of an island in the river La Vienne, at Saint-Germaine-de-Confolens, not the town of Confolens downstream.
View from the SW.

Log Text: It would be truer to say we tried to visit this site. We did find someone who knew of its existence but the access is over a private bridge to the island. A boat might be useful. Not possible to get close enough on either side of the river to take a picture.

Garde Epée dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Jul 2007. Garde Epée dolmen suffers from graffitti and rubbish, but is otherwise well looked after in a little clearing amongst the vines with its own sign.
It can be found just to the south of the D.157 road, a couple of kilometres west of Jarnac.

Log Text: An interesting tumulus. It is well covered by undergrowth and ivy so it is difficult to see its construction but there are a lot of loose stones around the edges that you can see so it may be that it is stone rather than an earth mound.

Dolmen du Marchais submitted by oldman on 2nd Oct 2018. I'm 6ft so you can see the scale of this dolmen
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The capstone on this dolmen is absolutely vast. It is accessed down a narrow footpath and then has a narrow ring of ground around it so it is difficult to get far enough away to photograph except from the approach path. It towers above you because you have to stand so close to it. There is a plaque saying it was given to the community by the owner in 1953 stuck high up on the capstone. I guess its condition as a 4 but an expert may say its damaged and should be a 3.

Pierre Levée de Soullans submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Jun 2011. In a little forest clearing beside the busy D. 69 road to the south of Challons, I found this stone because of the restaurant of the same name.

Log Text: Don't stop on the D69. The wood is enclosed on the other 3 sides by small roads all of which have signs pointing to the Menhir. It is also a pleasant wood to walk through along the path. Once you get there it certainly is an impressive stone.

Les Pierres Jumelles submitted by theCaptain on 24th Jan 2011. The Pierres Jumelles, or twin stones, are both about 4 metres high, but that is where the similarity between them ends.
One of the stones is a rounded block of lovely pink granite, while the other is a tall pointed grey stone.

La Sulette dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 13th Dec 2005. This is a pleasant find, as it has been fully excavated and restored in 1989 to 1991, and is now found completely within its mound, a kilometre or so to the northwest of St Hilaire-la-Foret.

La Pierre Aubrée
Date Added: 3rd Oct 2018
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Maine-et-Loire 49)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018
Log Text: These coordinates take you to the hamlet La Pierre Aubree. Talking to locals they direct you to the Menhir de Breau as the local menhir. We did search on this side of the river but access is very restricted and the bank is mostly a wall of rock. The Menhir de Breau is only a couple of hundred meters away but you have to drive about 6km to get there on the other side of the river. There is an old water mill on this side but it's now a private house. There is a very steep road down to it so there must be some level ground on this side of the river where there might be a menhir in the grounds of the house.

Log Text: If you put these coordinates into google maps it looks as if you can drive almost up to the menhir. In fact the last kilometer is a grassy path which descends quickly via a hairpin to run along the river. At the end of the path is a weir and a house on the other side which I believe is the site of an old watermill. The road runs steeply up from the house on the other side of the river so this could be an ancient crossing point. The path opens up into a large meadow enclosed by the bend in the river at this point. The menhir stands in the meadow backed by a rock face which drops into the far side of the river. The 3.5 meter menhir appears pointed on one side and with a wide flat top on the other.
