La Pierre Aubrée
Date Added: 3rd Oct 2018
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Maine-et-Loire 49)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018
Log Text: These coordinates take you to the hamlet La Pierre Aubree. Talking to locals they direct you to the Menhir de Breau as the local menhir. We did search on this side of the river but access is very restricted and the bank is mostly a wall of rock. The Menhir de Breau is only a couple of hundred meters away but you have to drive about 6km to get there on the other side of the river. There is an old water mill on this side but it's now a private house. There is a very steep road down to it so there must be some level ground on this side of the river where there might be a menhir in the grounds of the house.
Dolmen du Marchais

Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Vendée (85))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2016. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Dolmen du Marchais submitted by oldman on 2nd Oct 2018. I'm 6ft so you can see the scale of this dolmen

Log Text: The capstone on this dolmen is absolutely vast. It is accessed down a narrow footpath and then has a narrow ring of ground around it so it is difficult to get far enough away to photograph except from the approach path. It towers above you because you have to stand so close to it. There is a plaque saying it was given to the community by the owner in 1953 stuck high up on the capstone. I guess its condition as a 4 but an expert may say its damaged and should be a 3.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Failed to find this dolmen but the point on the road closest to these coordinates where the sat nav told us we had reached our destination was a large stone the top of which had been broken off to reveal an amonite. Could this be a menhir?
Dolmen de la Garenne (La Mothe)
Date Added: 1st Oct 2018
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Poitou:Deux-Sèvres (79))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018

Dolmen de la Garenne (La Mothe) submitted by thecaptain on 27th Jul 2008. The dolmen is in a clearing in the woods, and still mostly within its mound. I cannot be totally sure what this is the remains of, whether it is one chamber with a long and angled passage, or more likely two chambers with entry passageways.

Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018

Dolmen de la Pierre-Pèze submitted by thecaptain on 1st Dec 2005. La Pierre-Pèze is positioned in a lovely woodland glade and despite the noise of the busy road and the TGV trains rushing (quietly) by, the place is full of birdsong and a nice place to spend some time.

Dolmen de Beaumont
Date Added: 1st Oct 2018
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Poitou:Vienne (86))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018

Dolmen de Beaumont submitted by oldman on 1st Oct 2018. Site in Poitou:Vienne (86) France The dolmen could be hidden in here?
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: No one in the village had heard of a dolmen nearby and I can only assume that the coordinates aren't correct. Nothing visible nearby. Farmer let us look in his area and beyond his land is a disused railway which is very overgrown so could hide anything.

Le Breuil submitted by oldman on 1st Oct 2018. Site in Aquitaine:Dordogne (24) France

Log Text: It is difficult to be sure as the coordinates given here are for a location in a garden in the village of Breuil. The owner of the property knew nothing about a dolmen but other locals seemed to think that there was one down a track a little way from the village. We investigated and found two separate piles of huge stones either both or neither of which I am prepared to believe is a dolmen. I include pictures of both and their coordinates a short distance apart along the same track.
Butte-Ronde
Date Added: 1st Oct 2018
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))

Log Text: We tried to find this tomb when visiting Jardin-aux-Moines tumulus as it is quite nearby. The coordinates given for this site are in the same wood but in an impenetrable section so we had to give up especially after my wife came face to face with an aspic viper.

Peyrefitte
Date Added: 1st Oct 2018
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018

Peyrefitte submitted by thecaptain on 15th Jan 2006. Large menhir near to the Dordogne river in the commune of St-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens in Gironde.
This is said to be the largest standing stone in southwest France, (but not the tallest) and it is 5.2 metres tall, 3 metres wide and less than a metre thick, with the bottom part of it chipped away to make the distinctive shape.

Country: France (Aquitaine:Dordogne (24))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2018
Pierre Plantée (Lisle) submitted by theCaptain on 17th Jan 2011. As I was driving south along the D78 road coming into Lisle, I saw a sign saying Pierre Plantée and there was a stone about a metre high stood just by the roadside.
I cant be sure whether this is the actual Pierre Plantée referred to or indeed whether it is ancient but it isn’t new !
