Cop Stone submitted by nicoladidsbury on 16th Feb 2005. Cop Stone, Moor Divock, Near Askham
OS NY 4959 2160
We approached Moor Divock on bike, setting off from Askham, via Whale, Helton and Heltonhead, so I was a little bit tired....
The bridleway over the moor was smooth, level and firm, excellent for bike riding. We spotted the Cop Stone off to the right and, abandoning the bikes, we walked over springy turf and heather to investigate. The stone is aproximately 1.20m, and leaning to the north. Moor Divock is an exciting place, to the north t...

A bitterly cold day, with showers blustering over, followed by splashes of sunlight.
I managed to catch a fading rainbow, its hard to see on the photo however..

The 'Giants Grave' is a collection of ancient grave stones comprising two 11' high stone crosses and four hog-back stones. An excavation of the 'Giants Grave' showed a skeleton underneath with a sword. The four hogback stones surrounding the grave are said to represent wild boar he killed in nearby Inglewood Forest.

The grass in the field had just been cut for silage, and the stones lie is a long curved strip of high grass.
You can just make out one of the stones nestling in the grass... (if you look really hard!)

Beautiful quiet location, so still and pure, the nearby trees are covered in lichens, as are the stones themselves.

Hazel Moor Enclosure submitted by nicoladidsbury on 21st Jan 2005. Hazel Moor Enclosure
A difficult site to photograph.
Kings Well lies in the fold of land just below the stone wall, where the wall turns to the left.
Rising up from this point and going between the two trees, is a very large earth bank, up to five feet high in places. This bank leads up to the plateau of Hazel Moor, which is enclosed with further banks.
There also appears to be a bank to the left hand side of the photo

Four Stones Hill Standing Stones submitted by nicoladidsbury on 11th Jan 2005. Standing Stones at Four Stones Hill near Haweswater
Two stones remain, just below the summit of Four Stones Hill.
One of the stones is leaning towards its neighbour, and looks like it may fall.
There are excellent views from the stones down to the reservoir, and over to the magnificent fells of high street and Kidsy Pike.
A great place to go for a walk, but I didn't feel any special ambience there, I rather thought the stones looked like two gate posts.
Perhaps I should revisit witho...

Castlerigg submitted by nicoladidsbury on 5th Jan 2005. Castlerigg Stone Circle, near Keswick, Cumbria
This photo was taken on New Year's Eve. Remarkable sunlight filtered through wispy low cloud, lighting the stones, and Blencathra beyond. I liked the way the stones are reflected in the pool of water, giving a slightly different twist to the view I love so much!
