Site Type: Broch or Nuraghe
Country: Scotland (Isle of Lewis)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 4

Dun Carloway submitted by swatson on 28th Aug 2004. This impressive Broch is near Carloway in the west of the Island of Lewis. Sadly time did not permit detailed exploration but that's something to look forward to at a later date. There is enough of this tower standing to indicate the method and the superb workmanship involved in it's construction.

Bamburgh Castle
Date Added: 17th Mar 2025
Site Type: Sculptured Stone
Country: England (Northumberland)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 5

Bamburgh Castle submitted by Anne T on 10th Oct 2018. This piece of carved stone is recorded in the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture as the 'Bamburgh Castle' stone. Its style dates it to the last quarter of the eighth century to the first quarter of the ninth. Originally described in the 19th century as part of a large cross head, it is know known to be part of the arm of a stone chair or throne. A reproduction can be found outside the keep of the castle, although the Corpus says it is not clear if it is meant to be part of the back or seat.

Avebury
Date Added: 17th Mar 2025
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Saw from a distance

Avebury submitted by creators on 27th May 2005. I have been reluctant to submit this picture because it is a composite, taken on the same day in the same place but still a composite. It is AngieLake's exquisitely named 'receptors' hands receiving the moon and a picture I love.
So a composite done tenderly of Avebury that is at my very heart.

Ad Gefrin
Date Added: 16th Mar 2025
Site Type: Ancient Palace
Country: England (Northumberland)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 1 Ambience 4 Access 4

Ad Gefrin submitted by PaulH on 13th Mar 2003. Yeavering Bell hill fort
View of Ad Gefrin at NT926305
At the foot of Yeavering Bell is the site of probably the most impaces dating from the seventh century. The palace, Ad Gefrin, (the place of the goats) was one of the homes of King Edwin of Northumbria, whose name was given to another town - 'Edwin's Burgh', now known as Edinburgh.
It was at Ad Gefrin that St Paulinus baptised 3000 Northumbrians in 627 AD, just about twenty-five years prior to St Cuthbert's entry into Melrose Abbey.
