Maen Castle

Maen Castle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. The Maen Castle headland, viewed from the north. The chasm in the foreground is the aptly named Castle Zawn, containing the wreck of the ship RMS Mulheim. The defences of the cliff castle can be seen on the left side of the photo. There is a counter-scarp bank and ditch, then a berm, then a wall made of large granite stones packed with rubble. No traces of a settlement exist within the defended area, which is very exposed to the sea and prevailing winds.

It is in fairly bad condition, but still recognisable on this exposed headland where the elements and visitor pressure keep the vegetation right down. The island in the distance is the Brisons and Cape Cornwall can be seen poking in from the right.
