Rakovník Menhir submitted by ladrin on 13th May 2020. An interesting connection can be found in a close vicinity of the ancient structure structure "Viereckschanze Na Kokrdech".

Log Text: Notable stone monument standing north of the medieval royal town Rakovnik. Block of the coarse-grained sandstone with isolated quartzite pieces of a total length about 120cm. For a short time it was stolen in 80th. When the stone was secretly returned to its original place, it was laid down to a greater depth. Now it raises above the ground up to 65cm only.
The stone is widely known as "Petrified Virgin". Quite usual folk tale talks about a girl punished by for impiety and mischief. She was turned to stone, which has now allegedly a woman shape.
Even the experts are unsure about the origin and purpose. Some suppose the stone was a kind of milestone, some say it is the remnant of an ancient cross and others insist it is true menhir and believe in its prehistoric origin. Though any serious survey is still missing.
The true is that stone is situated just a few steps from the very probable prehistoric La Tène structure so called "Viereckschanze Na Kokrdech". And this fact can strongly support all the "menhir-origin" theories.
The Petrified Virgin is hard to miss. It is standing next to the main road on the verge of the field.

Kamenný Most Menhir submitted by ladrin on 28th Apr 2023. In 1896 two human skeletons were discovered in close vicinity.

Log Text: Locally popular menhir can be found by the fields west of the village called Kamenný Most (translate as a Stone Bridge). Almost one meter high stone with visible carving of latin cross.
In fact until now there are doubts whether it is "true" prehistoric menhir or medieval stone cross or even milestone. An interesting event happened in 1896 when two human skeletons were discovered in close vicinity by one of the locals. After that some sort of archeological survey was conducted therefore but without any significant success.
Geologist who studied the stone in 80th of last century came finally to conclusion that the stone is menhir. And so the stone is known today. Be that as it may, the stone simply stands there and I personally like it..

Drombohilly Stone Circle submitted by kenwilliams on 23rd Oct 2005. Drombohilly is a truly magnificent circle, though a visit is not for the faint hearted. After any spell of rain the terrain here is treacherous, barb-wire, slippery rock filled streams, shoe-sucking bog... Bring a trusted pair of wellingtons.

Dromroe submitted by frogcottage42 on 15th Mar 2010. This circle is in very good order and was next to the Beara Way path but as seems to be the case in many places locally the farmer has denied access and the path is now diverted 400m to the North.

Zbuzany Stone submitted by ladrin on 16th Dec 2015. Carving of a greek or an Ankh cross
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Nice and among the local community well known standing stone in sum. About 90cm tall hard sand stone, 25cm wide. The stone has uncertain history. First record about the stone is from 1785. There is an interesting carving of an greek or perhaps the Ankh cross on the back side. Local residents seem to be very proud of their little menhir, because there is 6 streets in total called "Next to the menhir... 1-6". Rumours say that an old druids shrine stood in the place of the village.

Smečno Menhir submitted by ladrin on 27th Dec 2015. 110 cm tall, 70cm wide and 25cm thick slab from slightly ferriferous hard sandstone. On the northern side is carving of the latin cross. There is a ĺocal folklore related to the stone about merchant murdered by bandits. It is not clear, whether it is an old menhir with newer carving or medieval propitiatory cross.

Log Text: Standing stone in the centre of the village Tuchlovice. It can also be a medieval propitiatory stone. Anyway to stone was replaced here from its origin location to prevent it before road construction. To be honest I would picked better location for such monument. Now it is hidden in the shadow of not much fancy shop building so it is really hard to notice it at all.
The other stone mentioned in the description is lost for ever I am afraid....

Log Text: Locally well known and favourite stone monument. Large granite boulder with several typical oval depressions, some may call it "prophetic" or "sacrificial bowls". Archaeological survey in 60s found some ancient working tools in close vicinity which fact can support therories about prehistoric sanctum.
Some nice folk tales are related to this particular stone. One is explaining where the name Herrgottstein - The stone of the Lord, came from. It says that these bowl like depressions arised on the seventh day of Creation. Three wishes will be fulfilled to whoever sits there.

Log Text: Czech Karst is a romantic and wild area roughly 130 square km south west of Prague. Mainly limestone rocks are rugged with deep gorges, canyons and karst caves. Despite the fact that caves in the Czech Karst are primarily smaller in size, it is the one of the most important region of speleo-archaeological interest in the Czech Republic. There is around 80 registered archaeological localities from practically all periods of the prehistoric and historic eras.
Superb Koda Cave is easily accessible rock spaces in this area. It has produced many findings mainly from the Neolithic and Eneolithic times. But also very interesting early to middle Bronze Age pottery pieces of an unusual nature, probably from the Alpine region.
Koda Cave is very popular tourist destination and is well signposted.
