Log Text: Along with Hagar Qim, this site was reckoned by Colin Renfrew to be the oldest free standing stone building on the planet. For that reason alone it should be on the bucket list of every megalithic nut!

Earlseat

Earlseat submitted by Nick on 3rd Nov 2003. NT319974 From the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, turn east along the A915, known locally as the Standin' Stane road, towards Leven. Earlseat farm is just to the north of the road, and the stone there can easily be seen from the road. This stone is a block of sandstone, around 4-1/2 feet tall, oriented approximately E-W. There are no visible cup marks on it. It's not very spectacular, but is in a nice open location.

Log Text: The easiest approach would be from the private road to Earl's Seat Farmhouse, which at the date of my visit was empty but now (Nov 18) appears to be occupied. There is nowhere to park on the private road before reaching the farmhouse, so it may be preferable to park off the A915 and walk round the field edge. The stone is visible from the main road.

Court Cave

Date Added: 23rd Nov 2020
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter Country: Scotland (Fife)
Visited: Yes on 13th Nov 2018

Court Cave

Court Cave submitted by johnur on 13th Nov 2018. West entrance to Court Cave in September 2018. Comparison with old photos on Canmore will show that the ground level outside the cave is now several feet higher than it was 100 years ago. The top of the old wall in the Canmore photos is now just below the present ground level. This is due to pit waste from Michael Colliery accumulating on the foreshore to establish a ground level which became permanent when rock armour was installed in the late 20th century to prevent coastal erosion.
