St. Peter's Pump submitted by KiwiBetsy on 3rd Sep 2006. St Peter’s Pump with view towards the National Trust’s Stourhead Garden sheltered by the trees in the distance. The site can be accessed from Stourhead Garden where it sits up the valley at the head of the series of lakes. It could also be reached from the road near King Alfred’s Tower where it can be glimpsed through the roadside trees.

Glauberg Fürstengrabhügel submitted by AlexHunger on 6th Jun 2006. Celtic Chieftains Tumulus in Glauberg dating to 500 BCE, just south of the Hillfort. The site was discovered in 1988 when anomalies showed up on the aerial photography. The content of the tumulus had drifted into the henge like ditch and processional way suroounding the mound and leading South. The grave in the middle was empty, but artifacts, in particular a complete life sized limestone statue were found in two other graves within the ditch. The mound was restored afterwards.

Knossos

Knossos submitted by Thorgrim on 12th Nov 2004. The Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete. Dating from the Minoan Bronze Age, the first palace was built around 2000BC and subsequently destroyed by earthquake. This later palace from the Neopalatial period had 1,200 rooms on five levels. In 1450 BC, it too was destroyed in a disaster caused by the volcanic eruption on Thera (Santorini) which destroyed that island and the Minoan civilisation. The restoration is by Sir Arthur Evans who commenced excavation in 1900.

Naghsh-e-Rostam submitted by KiwiBetsy on 19th Oct 2006. It is known that the tomb at the right (with the scaffolding) is that of Darius I also known as Darius the Great. Other kings probably interred nearby are Xerxes I, Artaxerxes II and Artaxerxes III. Darius I lived from 550 until 486BC and ruled Persia from 521BC until his death at which time the Persian Empire was probably at it’s peak.
