Valley of Stones quarry

Valley of Stones quarry submitted by Andy B on 21st Aug 2025. Possible Prehistoric Standing Stone found in Past Participate Brickworks Excavation. Drs Anne Teather and Hayley Roberts write: We had a very successful 2025 excavation season at the site of a brick kiln and possible clay working area in the Valley of Stones National Nature Reserve. It was probably built by the Bridehead Estate (as it is on their land) and used to make bricks for the farm buildings on the estate. We did not find a date for its initial construction, but it was likely to have ...

Fat Betty

Fat Betty submitted by johndhunter on 9th Jul 2025. Fat Betty, July 2025. The ancient custom of leaving alms and offerings (skittles or biscoff anyone) for those travellers less fortunate than oneself continues. Unfortunately when the wind picks up and it can get very windy up here this detritus in its plastic covered wrapping then gets strewn across the moor.

Lugbury

Lugbury submitted by theCaptain on 9th Feb 2010. Was passing by Lugbury at the weekend, a damp and misty February day, so I called in for a look to see how it was faring, and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the growth has been cleared from around the stones, and most of the junk and tree trunks have been cleared from the remains of the mound.

Winterborne Kingston

Winterborne Kingston submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jun 2026. I’ve wondered about this stone for many years. The grid reference we had, had it set back in a residential cul de sac. Checking on Google Street View really made it appear as if it would be in someone’s garden if it were there. I was going to check on 2nd February 2026, but much of the village was flooded and roads closed as the Winterbourne river responded to sustained heavy rain. I returned 2nd June on my next opportunity. I parked alongside the church, and walked around to Ware...

Westfield Farm Refuge Stone

Westfield Farm Refuge Stone submitted by Anne T on 11th Oct 2017. One of the other faces of the stone, where it shows slight traces of damage, presumably from having been toppled and re-erected. If the 1998 excavation report from Historic Scotland is correct, this stone may be prehistoric and associated with a larger prehistoric site, maybe having been reused as a Refuge Stone after the establishment of Torphichen Preceptory.
