Site Type: Round Barrow(s) Country: England (Surrey)

Albury Park Mound

Albury Park Mound submitted by Andy B on 17th Apr 2005. This is the most overgrown site we have ever investigated. After much searching we think we've located the lost barrow. We think the barrow is under the thicket you see in the background - with a bit of imagination you can see the shape of a barrow in the profile of the bushes.

Devil's Stone (Perth & Kinross)

Devil's Stone (Perth & Kinross) submitted by Nick on 5th Nov 2002. This large stone stands within the grounds of the Swallow Hotel (formerly the Graystane Hotel) just off the main Dundee-Perth dual carriageway, the A85. A small road to Denhead of Gray leads off the roundabout, and there is ample car parking at the hotel. Ask for permission to view the stone, which is readily granted. It lies behind the Conference Centre to the right of the main hotel. Adjacent to a section of railing, there are no cup marks or similar, though there is evidence of carved ini...

The conjoined Panels A/G/H are contiguous; during documentation of the site in 2003, Dan Reeves called these panels the 'Gordian Knot‘ due to the sheer complexity of paintings located there. Log Text: Although it is not a long walk it is a little tricky to find. Climb up the steep stone stile from the lane and then head straight on - over a wooden stile, across a small field, a sign directs you to the next field, then head down the side of the field about 3/4 of the way to the bottomkeep an eye right for the entrance which is just a gap in the foliage - but then the beautiful well with its sweet water is before you! Very evocative and peaceful spot on the 'Mary' line..

St Warna's Well

Date Added: 20th Jul 2019
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2019. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

St Warna's Well

St Warna's Well submitted by Thorgrim on 7th Jul 2003. A Celtic well later Christianised, this is the only holy well in Scilly. Located on the rocky shore above St Warna's Cove on St Agnes at SV 88040778, it has three steps leading down to the stone walled chamber. St Warna landed here in a coracle from Ireland and was the patron saint of shipwrecks. Islanders gave offerings at the well so that the sea would deliver goods from wrecked ships of which there are hundreds around Scilly.

Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter Country: England (Tyne and Wear)

Log Text: there is a pub nearby 'The Marsden Grotto' which is formed from a series of caves, set into the cliff. A lift takes you down to it - or there are many steps for the fit. Also nearby is Lizard Lane and Lizard Lane campsite. Perhaps in time past fossilized remains of a reptile/sea creature was found in the cliffs/caves/quarry?
