Rollright Stones submitted by Energyman on 21st Dec 2020. This was the closest the weather forecast would allow me to get to this year's solstice sunrise, 20/12/20 8:30am. Luckily very little cloud. The shot is from the altar as I call it, through the entrance at the King's Men, Rollrights.
This alignment was calculated by Jack Morris Eyton, though he never got the chance to confirm it.

Dyrham Camp submitted by Thorgrim on 22nd Aug 2003. Dyrham Camp, otherwise known as Hinton Hillfort, is best seen from high land in Dyrham Park (National Trust) Dating from the Iron Age, it was the likely site of the Battle of Dyrham in 577 AD when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that the invading Saxons under "Cuthwine and Ceawlin fought against the Britons and slew three kings, Coinmail, Condidan and Farimail at the place which is called Dyrham; and they captured three cities, Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath"

Three Shires Stone submitted by Thorgrim on 22nd Aug 2003. The Three Shires Stones mark the place where Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire meet. They are near Marshfield and Colerne on the Fosse Way at ST796700.
It is claimed that these boundary stones were erected in 1859 and are believed to be the remains of a chambered tomb. St Augustine's Well (Cerne Abbas) submitted by ermine on 9th Jan 2005. St Augustine's well in Cerne Abbas is a tranquil place. Walk up Abbey Street and turn into the graveyard - the well is a couple of hundred yards alond the track. The flow is good and was the village's source of drinking water in the last century.
The Abbey nearby is also worth a visit, as well as the nearby Giant hillfigure.

Poundbury submitted by JimChampion on 5th Jun 2005. Looking south across the Frome valley at the ramparts of Poundbury hillfort. You can see its rectangular perimeter in this composite picture - no wonder the Romans liked the site. Parts of modern Dorchester can be seen poking out e.g. the keep-like military museum is on the left. (The line in the sky is a power cable that I couldn't get away from).
