Wookey Hole Caves

Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been devel...

Wookey Hole Caves Museum

Wookey Hole Caves Museum submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. I encountered this palaeolithic hunter-gatherer in the "Dinosaur Valley" at Wookey Hole. Hopefully it doesn't reinforce the idea that 'cavemen' co-existed with dinosaurs. His beard is looking a little green.

Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west. Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...

Dyrham Camp

Dyrham Camp submitted by Thorgrim on 22nd Aug 2003. Dyrham Camp, otherwise known as Hinton Hillfort, is best seen from high land in Dyrham Park (National Trust) Dating from the Iron Age, it was the likely site of the Battle of Dyrham in 577 AD when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that the invading Saxons under "Cuthwine and Ceawlin fought against the Britons and slew three kings, Coinmail, Condidan and Farimail at the place which is called Dyrham; and they captured three cities, Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath"

Holy Well (Frome)

Holy Well (Frome) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 29th Aug 2006. This well sits beneath a Gothic canopy beside the processional steps up to St John the Baptists Church. The gates of the steps, which can be seen in the right of the picture, were locked when we visited. It’s worth climbing up the steps to the right of the processional steps to look at the sculptured stations of the cross. The well water flows from the mouth of a stone lions head into a basin and from there away in a gutter that runs down the middle of Cheap Street, which you can follow...
