Log Text: Very risky if care is not taken - cars whip by increidbly fast. Lovely well with steps going down, the water is audiable even running deeper than the well walls suggest. Take care when wet - leaves make it slippy :-)

Log Text: Lovely well! Shame the door was locked, holding a phone camera up to the gaps in the door there's some view but I would've loved to see what it's like open. The door carving is delightful and in great condition, and a plaque on the wall states it's been there since the 6th Century.

Log Text: Short walk down a right of way, was very overgrown when I visted but still lovely to see. The pump is a very good marker of where it is, since without knowing it was already there and what to look for I could've walked right past.

Sueno's Stone submitted by Cosmic on 9th Nov 2003. Another view of the Sueno Pictish Stone at NJ046595. The largest stone we've ever seen - enclosed in perspex case to protect it - only yards away from A96 Dual carriageway and yet how many people ever notice it?

Log Text: Gorgeous stone with absolutely oustanding carvings, the glass case makes for difficult photos but the informational plaques are outstanding.

Log Text: A very easy to access site (and one that I'd consider hidden in plain sight - driven past many times and not realised the history of the area). Sight from top of one of the barrows is gorgeous and from there it is easy to spot the other two further along. Has an information board on the way in if coming from the town side that's weathered but has a lot of information about the area.

Log Text: Gorgeous stone that’s very easy to find with the driveway to Brodie castle going right past it, makes for fab access. There’s an info plaque that’s brief but still great, ogham is unfortunately incredibly faded away.

Log Text: Absolutely gorgeous stone with bright clear carvings. There's a informational card at the base of the stone for local insight into how it came to be in the church. The church itself is also absolutely stunning with two stone crosses in its gardens and old wall paintings within the church that survived whitewashing.

Log Text: Lovely cross situated on a granite plinth that isn't original to it. Church notice board has some information on it - originally called the Seaureaugh Cross, it was removed from the mill with the same name in 1910 with permission from Captain William Frances Tremayne.

Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones)
Date Added: 5th Nov 2022
Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Tyne and Wear)
Visited: Yes on 31st Oct 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones) submitted by Anne T on 11th May 2018. This is the front of the Rothbury Cross head, described as one of the finest pieces of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the Kingdom of Northumbria. It is carved with scenes of the crucifixion and other motifs. The museum sign says it was made about 100 years after the Lindisfarne Gospels but "clearly belongs to the same artistic tradition." From the collection of the Society of Antiquities of Newcastle upon Tyne. Submitted with the kind permission of the Great North Museum.

Log Text: Great collection of items - some were removed for the Lindisfarne Gospells exhibition in the Laing Art Gallery. (We had also visited that & they are absolutely stunning examples of carved crosses).

Comparing photographs, I think this is Fowberry Moor Farm, Island/Deershed Plantation Panel, ERA-1842, Beckensall 179. The panel is stained dark red due to peat staining.
Submitted with the kind permission of the Great North Museum.

St Nicholas's Cathedral (Newcastle) submitted by nicoladidsbury on 13th Aug 2005. Elaborate Cross Slab, featuring two vertical sword shafts, similar to much smaller cross slabs found built into the fabric of the Norman wall in the ancient church at Old Ireby
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: A lot of rocks in one cathedral! Many carved rocks propped against various walls - some near the crypt and some directly across in one of the small enclaves. Wonderful carvings, a personal favourite is one of a sword handle & cross guard. Cathedral itself is stunning with gorgeous stained glass pieces & friendly staff.

Log Text: Delightful stone in a stunning cathedral. Had to ask at the informational desk if I could see it due to a flower show but the staff are friendly and all too eager to show it to visitors. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding it apparently, and it's not the only stone of it's age in the church - there's a piece of anglo-saxon knotwork built into one of the columns near another informational sign in the south transept.

Log Text: Stunning Menhir standing out alone close to The Gump (Woon Gumpus Common) - I expect it to get a lot more foot traffick after Enys Men, however during my visit it was absolutely empty and nobody around for kilometers.
