Boskednan stone circle

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Log Text: A long walk but worth it - stunning circle despite being a few stones short.

Boskednan Menhir 1

Boskednan Menhir 1 submitted by theCaptain on 14th Oct 2014. From my dim memories, I thought that the menhir was somewhere between the stone circle and the cairns along the path towards Men-an-Tol. On the way back I notice indeed there is a stump and perhaps a fallen stone right on the pathway where I was expecting it, is it remains of a pair? Pipers perhaps?

Log Text: A very sad little stump, it's ambience is definitely enhanced by the Boskednan stone circle behind it.

Boskednan A

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This view of the 'destroyed barrow'/cairn near Carn Galva, shows its alignment with Ding Dong mine on the horizon. Boskednan circle is on slightly lower ground not far from here, and on an alignment between the 'barrow'/cairn and the mine building. The flat sides of the pointed stones face north/south. (This pic was taken at 4pm in March 2004). The stones sit on a higher ridge at 227m.

Four Parishes Rock

Date Added: 20th Feb 2023

Four Parishes Rock

Four Parishes Rock submitted by Bladup on 4th Dec 2017. Four Parishes Rock, I believe the right hand side of this stone is a slightly different colour because it was once in the ground (for a long time), therefore making this a former Standing Stone. The weathering at the other end (left) is also going in the right direction if made when stood up. Ding Dong mine is visible on the right.

Log Text: Gorgeous stone with the most obvious cross on top, with a second cross on the south side and carvings beneath it.

Log Text: Did not intend to find this - saw it while walking along a track that's used as an access road to various points. Gorgeous well with easy access to view it from the road, and solid steps to go down to the water level.

Boslow Cross

Log Text: Two options for access - via a long trail from a road that seems to be used by vehicles frequently, or an incredibly muddy slog on a trial that continues across a road to The Gump in the other direction. Visited after there'd been some considerable lichen growth and couldn't entirely see the carvings, but still a lovely stone.

Log Text: Quite easy to reach from a trail start right near a road, gorgeous barrow with a chambered area that's almost invisible until you're on top of the barrow or at the right angle outside of the stone perimiter.

Log Text: Visted Lanyon Quoit many times but this was my first time here - absolutely stunning example of a quoit. Humbling to consider this was considered ancient by the folks that built the hill fort, spent a lot of time sitting and trying to take stone rubbings of it.

Chun Castle submitted by h_fenton on 28th Feb 2011. An almost vertical view of Chûn Castle, this photo is composed of 45 Kite Aerial photograph s that have been stitched together using Microsoft ICE, I think this image is slightly warped but it does give a good overview of Chûn Castle. Log Text: Stunning Menhir standing out alone close to The Gump (Woon Gumpus Common) - I expect it to get a lot more foot traffick after Enys Men, however during my visit it was absolutely empty and nobody around for kilometers.

St Nicholas's Cathedral (Newcastle)

St Nicholas's Cathedral (Newcastle) submitted by nicoladidsbury on 13th Aug 2005. Elaborate Cross Slab, featuring two vertical sword shafts, similar to much smaller cross slabs found built into the fabric of the Norman wall in the ancient church at Old Ireby
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A lot of rocks in one cathedral! Many carved rocks propped against various walls - some near the crypt and some directly across in one of the small enclaves. Wonderful carvings, a personal favourite is one of a sword handle & cross guard. Cathedral itself is stunning with gorgeous stained glass pieces & friendly staff.

Described as "(an) incised sandstone slab, set in the floor of Trinity Chapel, against the north wall. The simple cross has terminals with sharply angular ‘buds’ between short rounded ‘leaves’; semi-circular arch base. Mason’s (or carpenter’s?) square behind and to left of shaft. Thirteenth century?"

Log Text: Lovely carved rock but very hard to find, need to have a good look in the floor for it.

Great North Museum (Rock Art)

Great North Museum (Rock Art) submitted by Anne T on 10th May 2018. On display in a case in the Prehistoric display on the ground floor. Comparing photographs, I think this is Fowberry Moor Farm, Island/Deershed Plantation Panel, ERA-1842, Beckensall 179. The panel is stained dark red due to peat staining. Submitted with the kind permission of the Great North Museum.

Log Text: Great collection of carved rock art. Quite small but all are labled with as much provenance information as possible, some gorgeous examples of cup & ring marks.

Date Added: 5th Nov 2022

Visited: Yes on 31st Oct 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones)

Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones) submitted by Anne T on 11th May 2018. This is the front of the Rothbury Cross head, described as one of the finest pieces of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the Kingdom of Northumbria. It is carved with scenes of the crucifixion and other motifs. The museum sign says it was made about 100 years after the Lindisfarne Gospels but "clearly belongs to the same artistic tradition." From the collection of the Society of Antiquities of Newcastle upon Tyne. Submitted with the kind permission of the Great North Museum.

Log Text: Great collection of items - some were removed for the Lindisfarne Gospells exhibition in the Laing Art Gallery. (We had also visited that & they are absolutely stunning examples of carved crosses).

Log Text: Fab museum with a plentiful amount of pieces inside - both older neolithic axes & newer pieces and artefacts from Hadrians wall. Fully reccomend it to anyone in the area since it's a great place to visit.
