Boskenna Crosses

Boskenna Crosses submitted by cazzyjane on 18th Jun 2012. Boskenna Cross 2. SW4195 2418. Found beside a footpath one field north west of Boskenna Gate Cross. Only the cross head is ancient and has a broad- limbed cross on it which is very difficult to make out. It leans against the hedge and is often lost behind the brambles and foliage. Unfortunately there is also a lot of rubble around its base.

Oxenham Arms

Oxenham Arms submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Apr 2004. Oxenham Arms, South Zeal, Devon SX651935. An enormous and magnificent menhir built into the wall of a tremendous pub on the main street in the village of South Zeal, Devon. In fact, the pub is believed to have been built by monks in the twelfth century around the menhir. As the pub website says "A very interesting part of the house is the small lounge behind the bar. In this room, set in the wall, is a monolith and the theory of archaeologists is that the monastic builders placed the...

London Stone

London Stone submitted by Thorgrim on 1st Apr 2004. Once considered to be the guardian of the City and the place where all distances from London were measured, the London Stone now sits almost forgotten in a little glass box set into the wall of 111, Cannon Street opposite the Underground Station at TQ326809. Very difficult to photograph because of the internal light and glass. It is very low to the pavement and I put my compact digital to the glass and hoped for the best! The Stone is a fragment of oolithic limestone and must have been brou...

Wookey Hole Caves

Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been devel...

Pass the Caravan Park on the left and pull into the gateway of Trelil Farm cottage and farm sheds on your right. With the farm buidings on your right, to your left is a field that slopes down to a steam. Head down to the stream and away from the road to the north eastern corner of the field.
