Coed Y Glyn Burial Chamber submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Coed Y Glyn Burial Chamber SH514817 Visited Thursday 28th September 2000 SW Benllech; this sad and sorry chamber is nearly covered with vegetation swallowed up! The pictures say it all, really. Accessed by a footpath, and the chamber is to the left.

Hendrefor submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Ucheldref Burial Chamber SH551773 Visited Thursday 28th September 2000 SE Pentraeth, off B5109 Pentraeth to Beaumaris road. Two huge piles of stones in a field, basically! Another example of the decay of ancient monuments sad, but one supposes inevitable in many cases. The waves and contours in the rocks on these two are quite interesting to look at.

Whittington Castle

Whittington Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 16th Dec 2003. SJ 325313. A barrow-like mound (possibly re-used barrow) at Whittington Castle - not disimilar from ones at Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, or Boscobel House further east in Shropshire, near the Staffs border. A woman we spoke with here said that soil-core tests done here date contemporary with Old Oswestry Hillfort; she was adamant that the inhabitants of the fort actually dwellt here, and only moved to the fort in times of threat.

Roman Milestone (Temple Sowerby)

Roman Milestone (Temple Sowerby) submitted by Anne T on 6th Apr 2018. Close up of the southern face of the milestone. If there was an inscription, it has long been scoured away by the winds and rains. Today the A66 Temple Sowerby by-pass rushes by just to the west of this milestone. To think this has sat by a routeway for around 2,000 years.

Anwick Drake Stones

Anwick Drake Stones submitted by Andy B on 2nd Apr 2010. The Drake Stones Two lumps of Spilsby sandstone by the gate to St.Edith’s church known as “The Drake Stones” … actually a glacial erratic, but with a considerably more interesting Lincolnshire folk tale explanation. Long ago, a man ploughing a field north of the church saw his horses and plough mysteriously disappear into the ground and a dragon (drake) flew out. Next day when the villagers returned to the spot they found a stone shaped like a drakes head and thought there must be...

Hob Hurst's House submitted by Vicky on 17th Dec 2001. Hob Hurst's House barrow, Beeley Moor, Derbyshire GR: SK28746923 A general view of Hob Hurst's House. This unusual Bronze Age barrow is located approximately 5km south-east of Baslow on the remote area of open moorland above Harland Edge. It is made up of a central rectangular mound, approximately 8m by 7.5m wide and just under 1m in height. The mound is surrounded by a rectangular bank and ditch, the northern section of which has been damaged by a packhorse track. A small ring of five sto...

High Bridestones (Yorks) submitted by JimChampion on 7th Dec 2007. August 2007. The High Bridestones, on the moor. Just one of the megaliths is still standing, with small change firmly wedged into its many crevices. A megalithic shambles indeed. The heather in bloom says that it is summer, although the temperature (and wind) on this day was more like winter!

The Battle Stone (Ilam)

The Battle Stone (Ilam) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. The Battle Stone - remains of an 11th Century Cross in the grounds of Ilam Hall. For most straightforward access, leave the church with the two Saxon Crosses, left to the river, then before the river turn right for a pleasant walk along its side. The cross is on the right hand side after about 10 minutes walking, as a wide meadow arcs to the left. The cross was not discovered until 1840, and the name, one must suppose, is down to the imagination of those who discovered it.
