Nornour

Nornour submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2003. The island of Nornour (SV 944147) is less than four acres in size and is joined to Great Ganilly at low tide. Yet the excavations of the early '70's revealed the remains of a major settlement which was occupied from the middle of the Bronze Age to the Romano-British Iron Age. Nornour clearly reveals the effects of rising sea levels, as this tiny scrap of land could never have supported such a thriving community. Normandy Down

Normandy Down submitted by paulcall on 31st Oct 2006. A view of the delapidated easterly entrance grave looking north towards St Martin's. This grave gets trodden on a lot, as it is not normally covered in scrub like the other two. There are more stones to be seen here, but they are rather a jumble.

Date Added: 25th Jun 2012
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Would like to visit

Nordsteimke Dolmengrab

Nordsteimke Dolmengrab submitted by AlexHunger on 22nd Aug 2005. Nordsteimke Dolmengrab Front view. Smallish 1.5 Meters by 1.9 Meters menhir with with unusually rounded cap stone, surounded by 6 boulder sized uprights and surounded by large vestigial tumulus. The Dolmen was discovered in 1972 and restored in 1975. The plaque says the dolmen dates to 2000 BCE, though this seems a little late for this type of monument. To the side of the parking lot in front of the Sports complex. Close to Wolfsburg, home of the VW Beetle.

Newgrange

Newgrange submitted by DrewParsons on 6th Jul 2010. The reconstructed quartz facade is certainly an eye catcher although there is serious debate as to whether the original site looked like this. It is interesting that quartz played such an important symbolic roll at prehistoric sites across Europe through to early Celtic Christian sites where quartz pebbles would be left as offerings. Photographed in October 2002.

Newark Earthworks - Octagon

Newark Earthworks - Octagon submitted by bat400 on 25th Nov 2007. This photo was taken from the observing platform that is set on the east side of the connecting "road" between the circle and octagon in the "Octagon" earthwork site. Looking northeast toward the octagon. The small loaf-shaped mound at the end of the road blocks the view if you were entering the octagon by the "road". This is a typical of Hopewell construction - with openings that are "revealed" gradually. As you can see, the enclosures are far too large to get a good idea of the geometry w...
